45acp 200gr SWC

I just recently bought some of these from Berry's. I use Win 231/HP38 powder. Can someone suggest a recipe for 200gr 45acp SWC's

Greg,

What is your purpose for them? For target shooting try 4.2 grains. If your gun is not set up for target shooting loads and doesn't like that, go up 0.2 grains at a time until it functions reliably. The maximum in Hodgdon's site is 5.6 grains, but that's premised on a 1.225" COL with a particular bullet. I expect you won't have to go that far and will find 5.0 grains is an adequate maximum.

I'm running 4.8g of W231 using LSWC. Works great out of my Sig P220.

If your Berry's are plated - you might find 5.2 grains of WW231 to be accurate out to 25 yards with your 200 grain SWC.

Yes, mine are Berry's plated. I had been loading 5.2gr of Win 231 in my 230gr FMJ's before I bought these 200gr SWC's and I thought those were a little hot, so I wonder what 5.2gr out of 200gr will be like. Lymans 49 shows 5.3 to be the max for 230gr FMJ's. Not sure they have a listing for 200gr SWC

W231 is, in my experience, very consistent from lot to lot. 5.2 gr. is a good target load, in my book.

5.6 grains is my favorite all around load. Not wimpy. Not full power. Works with standard or heavy recoil spring.

5.7 or 5.8 W231 is the charge that just made major caliber in IPSC competion when the .45 was king.

5.7 gr. produces loads about the equivilent of WWB USA Harball, in my 5" guns with plated or jacketed 230 gr. hardball. About 775 fps. My standard SD practice load.

Many manuals claim that same velocity with 5.5 or 5.6 gr. of W231, but not in my guns. If I want to get up in the 830 fps range, I'm up to about 5.9 gr of W231.

That charge (5.7 gr.) produces over 800 fps. with the Win JHP 230 gr.

If you go below 5.0 or 5.2 gr., you'll probably need to go to a lighter recoil spring--and you may, anyway. A spring kit with variable weight springs will allow your gun to cycle with wet noodle loads, if you want.

NOTE: I use only Win. 231. If you want to assume that Hogdens HP38 is the exact same stuff, that's up to you. Typically, the Hogdens is slightly different than other powders with the same name.

W231 is HP38

I spoke to Mr. Hodgdon. They are exactly the same. Because of that, he said you might find the the two powders with the same lot number as it is only a labeling difference.
