45-70 case length?
As most of u know, we are a coin shop/pawn shop.
A guy came in and sold me a bunch of NEAT dugup coins and stuff. (Sure like to know the glory hole) Finding bottles, old cartridges, knives, coins.....amazing stuff. Coins in the 1850, 60, 70 range. BUT....back to the topic. Amongst the stuff I got from him are some 45-70 cartridges. Old loaded ammo. Maybe even GI stuff. But some are commercial. Some are from WRA Co and case is 2.1 " long like most I've seen. But the USC Co are 1.83" domed primers and old. But did they make different cartridges all called 45-70?? Both headstamped 45-70 (measurements are case only) |

The USC headstamps and shorter cases were generally loaded as blanks. Actual case length was 1.85".

Barnes' Cartridges of the World says the .45-60 for the 1876 Winchester has a 1.89" caselength. Close enough?
I have read of instances of wrong headstamps. |

According to the guy at http://www.calweb.com/~haas/ammoguide/ the case length is 2.105 inches. This appears to match the box of Remington ammo I have (well, I'm not too sure about that "05" part at the end). Don't know where he got his info.

.45-70 Case Length
The proper case length for the .45-70 Government caliber is 2.105". I believe what sricciardelli stated is true, those cases found to be around 1.85" long with the .45-70 headstamp where more than likely blanks manufactured for that caliber. Hope this help! Steve Mace
