Reloading Problem

I test fired six hornady 300gn xtp/hp, winchester case, winchester lge. pistol primer out of a Ruger Redhawk 51/2 bl 45 long colt, 15 yards and got horrible accuracy. Oh! I forgot using 21.0 gms. of H 110. Anyone have any suggestions to correct this problem.

How does it shoot with a normal load, say eight grains of Unique under a 250 grain bullet?

That sounds like a pretty hot load. Did you work up to that load? If you did work up from say like 18 gr, was the accuracy better with the lighter charge?

My Hornady book has no load data for H110 but W296 shows a starting load at 17.9gr

You might try to lighten it up a bit if you haven't already.

I'd tend to agree with the "king". The Hogdon site does not even list a loading for the colt with H 110. The same weight bullet in my .41 mag maxes at 20 gr but it is also for a cast bullet so I would say you are probably on the warm side. I did find a reference for H110 at Steves Pages. it listed 19.3to a bit over 23 grains for a 300 grain bullet but did not indicate the type of bullet or velocity of the load. I'm not sure I would use that data because H110 is usually listed as starting and max load being the same or very close to the same and it is usually not recomended to reduce H110 loads by more than 5%. I would assume the data is for an assortment of bullets.

Your inaccuracy could be caused by irregular ignition related to too much airspace in the case for the powder being used (possibly why it is not listed)and possibly a dangerous situation. You might want to switch to a different powder until you find a reliable source of data fo H 110 loads in the 45.

Thankyou all for your information. I will reduce the powder charge to around 17 gns. and see where that takes me. I'll post the results in a day or two. Pete

I don't have data for a 300 gr. bullet but I do for a 260 gr. HP.

MAX is listed at 20.0 grs of H110 for the 260 gr bullet.

17 grs might still be too hot!
