Hoppes overnight/has #9 changed?
Would it be bad to leave Hoppes #9 in a barrel overnight to get rid of lead deposits? I did it accidentally once and the lead came out like nothin', but I don't want to risk corrosion.

Hello, jpsshack. Well...If you read on the label, it recommends doing just that for really fouled bores. Hoppe's isn't the fastest solvent out there, but it has been protecting bores since 1903. Harry Pope swore by it...and that's good enough for me!

Yeah, that's the message I've been getting. Thanks for your input!
As a follow-up–I recently purchased a (very cheap) plastic bottle of Hoppes #9 at WallyWorld, and noticed that it had a completely different smell than the glass bottle of it that I had purchased previously (new old stock). It seemed to me that it must be a totally different recipe–or else the solvent had just reacted to the plastic. Have any of you experienced this? -jp |

Hoppes formula was changed a while back, maybe you still had some of the old stuff?
As for leaving it in overnight, sure, overnight, over the weekend, over the 2-week vacation.....................

Yeah, that must be it. The old stuff didn't have as strong an ammonia smell, I believe.

Hello again, jpsshack. Hoppe's did indeed change their formula...at the insistance of the EPA. The old Nitro-Benezene was removed..the stuff that cleaned so well. Gone too was the old familiar smell. Good news though...Bruno's Shooters Supply has been re-adding N.B. to their Hoppe's for years. This stuff is all I use. Best of luck!
