Would slugs cause premature wear on a Benelli M2?

I have a smooth bore Benelli M2 that I love. I've used it for turkey and fired some of the 3" turkey loads out of it, but never a slug during deer season.

Can a smoothbore M2 handle the rifled slugs okay or will it cause premature wear or other issues?

.

Anybody can shoot the snot out if it, with or w/o slugs, w/o fear of hurting anything other than their shoulder.

I don't see how it would hurt anything.

Why would you think it would? Lead is softer than the steel barrel. If your gun can handle those uber-loads you were shooting (from a spring capability viewpoint), then slugs would not be any different

I've owned a lot of Benelli shotguns. I can tell you for a fact you won't wear one out shooting any factory load out of it. Have you looked at the locking lugs on the bolt? No way are they going to wear out from shooting. I have had some Benelli shotguns with over 50,000 rounds out of them and they look and cycle like new. My favorite hunting shotgun is my Super 90 and it's still looks like new after about ten years of hard use.

As long as you don't use a very constrictive choke, the gun will be just fine. I avoid firing slugs in anything tighter than a modified choke just to be safe.

Have any of you shot slugs out of a smoothbore Benelli M2?

How is the recoil?

Depends on what slugs you are using. 3" magnums? You'll definitely feel it and won't want to shoot too many. Reduced recoil 2 3/4" loads? I could go all day.

Our Dept. issued shotguns are twenty years old and we only shoot slugs through them. Up until five years ago it was always Winchester 1oz slugs and now we shoot federal low recoil. Either way, each shotgun is shooting at least 250 slugs a year during quals and I haven't seen any wear issues.
