Water & Wings in PA - closed?

Has anyone been there lately? We tried to go up last week and they had a recording that they were closed on Fri, Sat & Sun due to "weather". It was beautiful outside on Friday.
Called today and the machine says that they are closed today (Friday) due to weather. Again, it's real purdy outside right now.
Anyone know what's going on? Did they finally close and are going through denial?
Is there someplace else to shoot .308 nearby?
I feel the need to put holes in paper from distance.
Thanks,
Mike

I haven't heard that they closed but I am pretty sure nobody feels like shoveling the snow up there. The snow drifts might be pretty high.

Wait for the spring thaw.

Bah! We're going anyway. Plan B is a trip one exit further up to Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays. One way or another, we're turning money into noise this weekend!

I should have my assault turkey gun assembled by this weekend. I got the 8 shot tube and shell holder for my 870 but I still have the 26 inch barrel on it.

Look out turkeys!!!

I was up there today. Took two lads along with their M1A and FAL. The SC's are snowed-in. The rifle & pistol ranges were open. All the backstops are junk. Bring your snow boots.
Were I you m0ntels, I'd not pin my hopes on this place being around much longer.
They've sold to a developer and it's only a matter of time now....
The place was deserted today except for one of the regular snipers that I always see there.
Shot plenty of .308 and got to test the new firing pins in the 336 and WM.
Also patterned the Vang barrel at ten yards. It was OK.
Shot a couple birdshot 7.5's from the '55 WM also at 10 yards to see how it patterned. Very nice.
It was a beautiful day and if you dressed appropriately, you could spend some nice relaxing time up there this time of year.
I could be convinced to scoot up there again next weekend.

I use Bucks County Fish and Game.

http://www.bcfg.org/index.htm

They are in Doylestown. It costs about $100 a year for a membership, well worth it. If you'd like to try the facilities you can PM me. I could take you as a guest. The rules are slightly more restrictive than Water and Wings i.e. no rapid fire and paper targets only on the rifle and pistol ranges; other than that it's a pretty good range.

Would that really be a good idea for PA residents. I would think a PA resident would be risking arrest every time they go to the range. Either something with hollow points, not having an FOID card, or a NJ banned weapon.

Then don't bring those items. There are many PA residents using that range. Quantrill

The point being which items?

Then there is still the issue of not having a NJ FOID card that is supposedly required to legally possess a firearm in NJ unless you are participating in a sanctioned documented competition or traveling through without stopping under Title 18 USC926A.

I personally wouldn't want to risk going to jail, and losing my 2nd amendment rights forever, because I inadvertently had a hollow point bullet, didn't have a FOID card, or had a high cap mag in my range bag that I forgot to take out before traveling into New Jersey.

I'm going to try and post something in the not too distant future about all of us coming together and finding a new Rally Point. We need to find a gun club or plot of land where we can shut everything down and have everyone WE INVITE come out. Considering the quality and seriousness of some of the people that have come out, or might come out, we need a quality range if W&W closes down.

Too bad about W & W. Bad management. Ranges seem to thrive for awhile and then go downhill.

Unless someone has some remote property finding a place to shoot will be very difficult.

Might be possible to put together a not for profit corp to buy a piece of land and set up a private range. If we could get a group together willing to invest in the land.

Looking on the local maps there are dozens of Rod and Gun clubs listed as property owners. Problem is finding land where we could shoot without the locals bitching and causing problems.

I think about 10 acres should do it, But land is expensive. The property would have to be remote and have no local town restrictions. Insurance might be a biatch also.

Ideas?

I have a friend that has property that could work up in the poconos - Potter County. Sorta a family hunting/camping place. It has enough acreage and is remote enough. We would have to do a bit of work. He can and does shoot there although not often anymore as he has back problems. There is no official range setup though, so we would need to do some marking measuring and what not. Portable tables would be sufficient for benches. I'll talk to him about it this weekend.

I've got a place in Potter Co., but it would be a five hour or more drive for you guys in the Philly area. Potter isn't in the Poconos....much further west.
Also its limited to 100 yards.

Perfect for an informal shoot.

How close is it to Ackley's, I have been to Ackleys and it is a drive, but worth it.

Ackley's doesn't ring a bell with me.
Our place is near Cherry Springs State Park. That's listed on most all Pendot state maps.

Geoff,
Ackleys was burgled. Below is the blurb on it. Potter County is further West.
Pappy John, Is there an airport nearby your place in Potter County? Quantrill

A familiar stop for sportsmen of the Southern Tier was robbed early Sunday morning. Ackley and Sons, of Westfield PA, were burgled by thieved who, police say, knew what they were doing. Officials say that the suspects disabled the stores security system allowing them plenty of time to steal nearly 200 semi-automatic rifles and a wide array of handguns. The stores owner says that everything was insured, so he wont lose any money, but these guns could be going anywhere. This is the largest burglary ever committed in Tioga County. Pennsylvania State Police urge anyone with information to contact them at 570-662-2151.

Geoff, okay, I know where Westfield is located.

Quantrill, yes there is a large grass airstrip at Cherry Springs. Elevation is around 2300 ft IIRC.

I found that airport on the map. A couple of us could get in that way if the weather is OK and someone could pick us up (if there were to be a gathering). Quantrill

Wow 200 guns, that would not even make a dent in their inventory!

That had to be an inside job.

You are correct Quantrill, it is just over the Tioga county line. I missed it and drove into Potter county, that's why I mentioned it.

It would be a ride for me in Susquehanna County, The guys from Philly would need sleeping arrangements.
