Rem 1100 12 GA ?

Hello all,
I bought a Rem 1100 12Ga. I over paid a bit I think, (500) but it had the best looking walnut I have ever seen. Anyhow, It an older model, and only shoot 2 3/4 shells. If I ordered a new barrel for it could it shoot 3 in. or am I stuck with 2 3/4 for life?

The gun is designed to only shoot 2 3/4" shells, but you should be able to get 2 3/4" ammo for whatever you want to shoot or hunt. Mark

Yes, I am aware of that. If I want to shoot steel I'll need a mod choke, and its a full now, so I will need a new barrel regardless, was just hoping that I could get one that would make the gun fire 3in shells.

You do not need a new barrel, you need yours drilled and tapped for choke tubes.

The point is --- the opening in the reciever / since it was built to handle 2 3/4" shells probably is not big enough to handle ejecting and cycling 3" shells...so it isn't just the size of the chamber in the barrel that matters ...its the receiver as well.

Remember shells are sized - based on their fired length ...

On a budget - you could have the choke in the barrel reamed out to a Modified ...and even though you would still have to stick to 2 3/4" shells ...there are so many options for commercial shells these days in 2 3/4" it will probably be enough gun to handle most anything you want.

The other way to go -- is to replace the barrel with one that has screw in chokes ...so you can change it for the bird or game you want....but I think you're still stuck with 2 3/4" shells - or you're going to have some cycling issues.

The 1100 will ONLY fire 2 3/4 shells. The 11-87 will shoot 2 3/4 and 3" shells.
Bottom line, if you want to shoot 3" shells, sell or trade the 1100 and get an 11-87.

1100 magnum shot 3 in shells, find one of them and keep tha barrel from the 2 3/4 in gun and use it on the mag for short shells swap to other barrel for 3in shells. The reciever in the 2 3/4 in gun will not take a 3 in. Have to go the other way round.

Much of the info above is incorrect.
A 2.75" 1100 will fire 3" steel with a steel shot barrel. A 2.75 receiver will cycle and fire 3" lead shells, but the gas system and recoil springs are designed for 2.75 payloads, the heavier loads will cause excessive wearand possibly premature failure.
The powder in steel has a different burn rate, and will work in the 2.75's gas sytem without damaging it. Modern steel wont damage a fixed choke 1100 barrel. We shot it for years when we were forced to switch.
When you add in shipping and insurance, you can buy a steel shot barrel just about as cheap and faster than you can get chokes intalled.

I had and older magnum model that came with a 3", full barrel. I bought an after market 2-3/4" Mod barrel, for upland. Obviously I had no problems shooting either. At that time, My understanding was that the problem was not in the barrel, but the reciever which would not handle the 3" shotshells in a reciver rated for 2-3/4"

By the way, I have a 2-3/4" Mod., Vent barrel for sale if you are ever looking for one. PM me as you wish ...

Absolutely correct. In my young and ignorant days I fired many a round of 3" Remington Magnum buckshot through my 1100. Kicked like a horse!
