A modern day Dirty Harry would carry a Guncrafter Industries .50 GI 1911.

Dirty Harry would carry a .22 RF handgun. The recoil from anything larger would really hurt his arthritic hands.

I think he would stick with the 44 magnum. Some folks are "a scared" of the old 44 magnum and that's too bad, it is a great cartridge. Love it. Personally I think if you are going to be DH and shoot one handed, like he did in the movie, then the 44 magnum is about the reasonable limit. I shoot a 44 magnum one handed. The gun does pop up pretty good and there is a recovery time in bringing it back on target.
So...going hog hunting in Georgia- Yeah, I might try one of the heavier guns just for fun, but for a DH- I'd still use the old 44 Mag.

After reading every word of this thread, my only thought is: I sure hope Dirty Harry is available on Netflix! Off to check right now... (and he'd still be using a 29)

.44 Auto mag.

His .44 Auto mag worked then and it still will work. I load for mine and it is inexpensive to shoot.....as long as I pick up each piece of brass.

Good point. I shoot revolvers mostly as it is easy to save the brass for reloading however I am also a big fan of the 1911. Personally I think the 1911 is as fool proof or maybe more fool proof than any revolver. Almost all jams on a 1911 are shooter form.
Also love the Model29 from yesteryear with the lug half way up the barrel, classic gun.
