Avoid This Place!
I bought my son a .22 rifle for his birthday at Sports Authority here in Kalifornia.
Sports Authority apparently has decided that the state mandated 10 day waiting period is not enough and extended it to 11 days for guns sold at their store! The DOJ counts the day of sale towards the waiting period but Sports Authority does not. Who do these freaks think they are? I will not even buy a pair of shoestrings from that place now! I know it's just another day, but it sure gripes my behind! IMO, stay away from Sports Authority! Below is a web site to express your opinions to them. http://www.thesportsauthority.com/h...aveQuestion=yes

That kind of crap is why I get my guns from a real gun shop...I know I pay a little more, but so be it. I agree with you...

Just a thought-- perhaps they are being very very careful in case the state counts hours, minutes, and the thoughts of a fine and jail time make the extra day sensible? Think about it-- no excuses but I know how the government works-- I closed a business over a year ago and turned in my business license, but was billed for six months for sales tax and had liens filed at the courthouse until finally I talked to a young woman over the phone that straightened most of it out. She said I should of sent in ZERO amount returns until orignal letter was acknolwdeged!!
Just think about it-- a slight error and WHAM-- you are out of business. The government, not the economy, is the main reason I no longer run my own business. The stress of the thing is not worthwhile even when you go completely down the line. Just a thought. Of course, anyone as careful as them will probably get screwed. The real crooks get away forever!

I purchased a rifle several weeks ago in California. My Sporting Goods Outfitter said the day of the sale did not count towards the waiting period. I asked him about the waiting period, I thought it was still 2 weeks he said no 10 days.
I purchased another rifle at Wally World several years ago here. I bought it at noon. I went back at 9 AM at the end of the waiting period to pick it up,they told me I had to wait till noon for it to be released to me..... Needless to say that pissed me off to the max. |

The hours do count, but it's no big deal. Just pick it up at the right time.
The waiting period is 10 days, I have bought 4 guns in the past 4 months, all from different dealers, all on a 10 day wait. With all the talk of "Civil Rights" these days, it sure seems like they are violating the "Civil Rights" of potential gun owners in CA since they are ignoring the law that says we can have the gun after 10 days as long as our records are clean. Oh well, I'll just exercise my right not to shop there again. It's the principal of the darn thing! It's a good thing I'm going to my happy place tonight........the range!

Thanks, I did the same. It's the only way we can stop this crap. Take the fight to them. I have posted this story on many forums as well as informed the NRA.
Most people understand what I am talking about. Others think they are just covering their "6". That may well be, but SA even acknowledged that their policy was different from the state by stating that "even though the state recognizes the sale date, they (Sports Authority)do not" This all may seem small, and in the grand scheme of things it is. However, CA already has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country and we don't need a retailer to come along and make it worse. We also have elitist, hypocritical Senators that bash the 2nd Ammendment and hold CCW permits themselves! Now a Nazi/Kennedy puppet Gov. that smiles in your face and takes away your guns behind your back. Give them an inch and you know the rest! I'm a pretty happy guy usually but I'm tired of crap like this. As the quote goes, "We can hang together or hang separately" (paraphrased)

Last gun purchase from Wal Mart
Over the christmas shopping season We bought each of our 2 sons a rifle , (30/30 & .270), from wally world. In each instance, it took over an hour to get out of the store with our purchase. We were informed that a "manager"
-(some little 20 yo kid) had to physically take the gun out of the store and place it in my vehicle. I'm 45, an ex LEO, and am here to say that If I have to waste this much time & have some rugrat kid check me out & escort me out of a store, then I ain't going back! I'm not a big fan of w/m anyway, but from here on, my $$ goes to my local dealer.... The bright side of this is, at least here in KS we can still buy a rifle/shotgun & walk out with it that day. |

Unfortunatly, if it were not for Walmart, I would not be able to purchase any firearms or related supplies within a 20 mile drive unless it's a m-f between 9am and 4;30pm. It's only 18 miles to the next Walmart. Anyway, they (walmart) have treated me well overall, but depends on who is working the sporting goods area. I think some of these clerks are anti gun or anti hunting and they make it difficult for you whenever they have the chance.
I purchased a handgun at a Gander Mtn. store in the fall. The selling clerk deliver the gun to me (in it's box inside a store bag) just outside the front door. At the same business but in a different city, I purchased handgun ammo that is kept behind the counter. They needed to see my pistol permit first. Then because I didn't have that same cal. on my permit as the ammo I was buing, they denied me. I asked to see mgr. and after showing ID (badge) they sold it to me. I mentioned this at another store of same name, they could not believe they had such a policy it their other store. Again, I think there are a few swelled heads and perhaps an anti or two working in these stores. Then there are young guys (gals too) who need a job and want to be sure they are doing everything right. As long as they are polite, I don't mind spending a few extra minutes. These clerks are often outdoor sportsmen too and maybe they will be shooting next to you at the range someday. Overall, it upsets me that we have to deal with this crap, but on the otherhand, I am often glad that someone has the balls to question someone when things don't look right. It is difficult to get guns and ammo and it isn't getting any easier. I also know that you can't trust everyone. If they can't buy it, they will swipe it. The bad guys just swipe it! I wish I had spent more money at the local gun shops when they were still in business. |

The only time I've bought a firearm and wasn't "escorted" out of the store was at a gunshop that was a single room.
Even at a larger shop here locally where the firearms was in the back, ammunition and fishing was in the front, I was escorted from the firearms counter to the front desk where I was cashed out. Of my several guns bought from W/M I've never had the manager go any farther than the front door. Actually the last rifle I bought yesterday, a 10/22 stainless from W/M, two gentlemen was working the counter, one taken my license, asked where I was born and if everything was correct and ran the background and had the results before I even had the 4473 filled out. Legal or not (in doing the background check before filling out the 4473), I appreciate them taking the courtesy of moving the customer out so that others can be served. |

I have never been "escorted" out, even at Kinseys Outdoors...it's kind of a Gander Mountain type store. If I was to be escorted to the door by a manager, I would escort him the the returns counter and get my money back. If they are worried about an unloaded gun in a box they would flip if they knew I had a fully loaded one on my hip.
Seriously, they will let someone walk out with a hunting knife, which is alot more dangerous than any unloaded and boxed up firearm. If they are that worried about it just deliver it to my door, that I won't mind.

Gart.
Here in WA we have Gart, which is a sporting goods store owned by the Sports Authority corporation. After doing the background check on the shotgun I was purchasing, I was told that the clerk at the gun counter had to escort me to the checkout area, then to the door. It was rather emabarrasing, with all the other customers staring like I was a caught shoplifter.
Had no touble with my last W/M purchase, or at any other gun shop I have used. I guess, moving from TN to the west coast, I should have known. It's a damn shame, but they'll figure it out when they stop selling guns. I have also posted info everywhere that will let me. Hate that it has to be this way, but I have as many rights as the soccer mom in line behind me. Or at least, I used to.

They simply follow the rules to the letter even if they sometimes misinterpret. But being fined by ATF is more of a risk to them than losing a gun customer or two When they make much more money selling fishing gear, soccer balls and camping gear. Wjy is this standard not applied to the gun manufacturers them selves. We've been making some progress with the politicians lately but if pressure was put on the gunmakers themselves alot of these situations would go away

I know for a fact that if you buy a gun at Cabela's (at least in Nebraska)you will not be allowed to take real possesion of the gun until you get to the door when you leave. it ain't that big of a deal. I worked at Cabela's for 2 years and there wasn't any customer that complained about it. yes there was customers that I would have let take the gun out on there own. there is also some instances that I would have rather not sold the gun to the person to begin with but that is another story you don't want me to get started on.

Seems about 3 years ago, I had my eye on one of those cute little Chipmunk rifles (daughter was approaching 8 y/o, & it seemed like a good enough excuse to buy one ). Our local Waldorama occasionally had one for $99, & they list for about $200. Saw one there one day, decided a day or two later to go back & get it. Surprise, surprise, no guns in Wally's cases, hasn't been a firearm in a Kalifornia WalMart since (but the notices are still taped on the glass cases, stating that they won't be selling guns for a few weeks). Went to Missouri last summer, the Chipmunks were $189 at BassProShop, but I found one at WalMart for the remembered price of $99, snapped it right up. It did take about 30 minutes to get out of the store (had to find a manager, who was on lunch break), he was in his early 20's too. Right nice feller just the same, asked me if I needed some ammo to go with it (here in Kali they will NOT let you walk out with a firearm and ammo at the same time, you have to go put the gun in yer trunk, go back in & buy ammo, then return to your car & load up ). So he tosses a couple boxes of LR's in with the rifle & carried it to the door for me . Just today (back in Kali), I bought a new car stereo for wifey's ride at Walmart, and get this: I had to sign a freaking LOGBOOK before they'd let me take it! Reminded me of when we used to have to sign a log book to buy handgun ammo (whatever happened to that, anyway?).

CA waiting period
Just for the record, the California waiting period is 240 hours not 10 days.
If you purchase a firearm a 2:43pm on 12/01 you can pick it up after 240 hours have passed on 12/11 at or after 2:44pm. Not at 2:15pm or 2:30pm, but on or after 2:44pm. The time is set by the computer used to perform the DOJ registration check.

your the one who lives there.
so a 10 day violation of your rights is OK, but an 11 day wait gets you upset? i think the root should be addressed not one on the leaves. just wanted to add this... i am not coming down on you. i'm a former Marine as well. i just choose not to abide by laws that violate my rights. and when the time comes when i have to pay for that choice, i guess i will. OH, got to say this... I promise you that if Wall-mart could stop selling guns today, they would. they are well aware of the amount of money gunowners and hunters spend there. they are just playing both sides. |
