SPM and SRM
I am new to reloading. I was at a local gun show and was asking advice as to what I needed for primers for 9mm, 44 MAG, 45, and 223. I was told to buy
CCI SPM 550 for 9mm CCI SRM 450 for 223 Winchester WLP large and magnum primers for 44 and 45 I also purchased Hodgdon H335 and Accurate 2230 - for loading 223 Alliant Blue Dot - for 9mm / 45 cal Alliant Unique - for 44 mag / 45 cal The problem is finding a receipt for the components I have does not seem to exist. My question is #1 "Can I use the SPM 550 in place of SP 500 for 9mm / blue dot?" #2 "Can I used the SRM 450 in place of SR 400 for 223 H335 / accurate 2230?" I would appreciate any help. I am thinking of buying SP 500 and SR 400 so there is not any problems. Thanks. Last edited by accinsp; August 27, 2012 at 05:49 PM. |

Welcome to TFL accinsp !!!!
It would have been best to purchased the correct components . Check ya recipes as to what ya need . On the larger calibers as a rule of thumb if a mag primer is substituted for regular we back off the powder 10% even for starting loads . I don`t load 9mm or 223 & can`t really say for sure if the 10% rule applies to the smaller rounds. My personal testing shows very little difference in power of cci500 & 550 ,just the 550 cup is tuffer for hi pressures. Wish I could be more help on the 9 & 223. Try the search engine & see what filters out for ya .

I wish I could help with the CCI 550 primer issue but the only primer I use for my 9mm is the CCI 500.
If it was me, I would go back and get the CCI 500 primers, but wait to see if someone says more definite on the CCI 550 primers. |

I would go with whatever your load manual recommends as far as primers go, but I'm pretty sure most 9mm loads just use regular small pistol.
For .223, I use CCI #41. It's a small rifle primer with a harder cup to resist accidental detonation if the firing pin hits the primer when the bolt closes. The #41 uses magnum primer compound, so I would suspect that magnum small rifle primers are okay for .223 in general. Just start off at the recommended "starting load" and work up gradually. |

Magnum primers for 9 mm is a good question. I specifically asked the same question and was told that Instead of buying multiple primers, you buy the magnums and you can use them for both. I guess I was given wrong information.
It looks like the only primer I have to replace is the 550. Speer recommends a SRM primer for 223. Is the Winchester WLP primer okay for 45? |

You could use magnum primers for everything but you would have to work your loads up again from minimum. Some people use only magnum primers that way they only have to buy one type. Also when a shortage scare goes into effect the small pistol primers are the first ones to be sold out.
One drawback to only magnum primers is that they usually are a little more expensive. Mac |

Interesting questions. I grabbed my Sierra reloading manual just to check out powder & primer combo's.
In 9mm, Sierra shows Blue Dot loads with a standard SP primer (CCI 500) with bullet weights from 90 grs to 130 grs. They also show 9mm loads using Unique also using a standard SP primer. In 45 ACP, Sierra shows Blue Dot & Unique loads with a standard LP primer (CCI-300) with bullet weights from 200 grs to 240 grs. In 44 Mag, Sierra shows Blue Dot & Unique loads with a LP magnum (CCI-350) in bullet weights from 180 grs to 240 grs. In 223, Sierra shows AA-2230 loads with a Remington 7 1/2 SR primer for bullwt weights from 40 grs to 63 grs. I know that the 7 1/2 is a Brench Rest primer, but not sure that it considered to be a magnum primer. Sierra shows no 223 loads with any of their bullets using H-335. Too bad you didn't get H-322, as I have used it with excellent results in the 223. AA-2230 is also an excellent choice for 223 IMHO. |

Thank you SVO. I have been doing some research and it seems to be mixed reviews all over the place. I guess it's whatever works. I am very new to reloading, just decapped and cleaned my first batch last night. So I am as green as it gets.
I appreciate everyone's input. My decision is Buy CCI - 500 for the 9mm. Saved the 550's for future reloads. Buy CCI - 300 for 45 Use the Winchester LP magnum for the 44 Magnum Use CCI - 450 for 223. Just going to reduce 10% and then scale up. CCI #41 is a magnum primer and the only difference between CCI #41 and CCI 450 is crimping method. Not sure what that means, but it does not effect the reloading process. There are those that do not recommend standard rifle primers for 223 at all? |

So fare you are safe with what you have and with what others have said for you to do.Backing off 10% will work with the 9mm and any other pistol that uses a small pistol primer.
For your 223 loading I would just load up what ever load you want to use.I have been reloading for a 223 for many years now and only use the CCI 450 mag primers with all of my 223 reloading. Now I will say that I am reloading for two different 223's both in a bolt gun.For an auto I cannot say or will not try to offer any idea's. Again I have used many different powders when loading for a 223 even bullets.Even to this very date I have yet had any kind of problem useing a mag primer ( CCI 450 ) when testing loads for a 223.I have even had a few compressed loads that really worked for one of my rifels. My bench gun as of now is running a compressed load with out any type of problem. But its your call not mine just letting you know that you are OK in my book to use them.

If it were up to me, I would run the WLP's in 45 and 44. It says for std and mag loads on the box. I use it for both and have no issues.
