Spotted coon hides

Typically a fleshed coon hide will be a light cream color; we;ve been seeing hides that are little darker and spotted. What causes this? Is it location and diet, or are we doing (or not doing) something wrong?

Thanks!

Black spots on the hide side are tick bites.
