#6 bird shot, slugs, or both for now for HD?

No OO on hand yet. But those will be it soon.


I just got my 20ga Mossberg, I got it at walmart, well, after getting in an argument with the manager, and I'm really made, I still decided to get some ammo while seeing fire. I asked for slugs and buck shot OO. He found the slugs, but he couldn't find the OO's. So I said just give me some bird shot and the slug's because I ran out of patience and wanted to get out of there. He didn't seem to know what he had.

I just might go back tonight when the night crew is in and double check.

I'm feeling OK for now with the bird shot, I just want to see why I shouldn't and load it with slugs.

PS:I have plenty of "hand cannon's" and a Mosin Nagant.

Ohhh. one more thing, should I remove the choke on this smooth bore for slug's? The slug's them self's are rifled for smooth bore.

You aren't going to find 00 Buck from the majors. Your choice is #3 buck from all of them or #2 Buck from Federal in their 3" shell.

If you want 00 Buck you'll have to go through a specialty outfit like Paraklese Tech. to get it.

Personally I believe if you can't do it with (20) .25" or (18) .27" pellets you have more serious issues that (9) 00 Buck from a 12 gauge probably can't handle.

Edit: Leave the choke in. Brenneke and Foster slugs will gpo through just fine.

Yep, 00 for 20 gauge is not common.

If you got multiple chokes, improved cylinder (IC) is probably a good choice for slugs, and also for buckshot.

This is not a big deal, a life or death question. I have everything from a pellet gun to a 44 mag. I just loaded it up for now with 4 slugs and a #6 bird for the first shot, as if....

Don't worry about the chest thumpers who are afraid that anything less than a 3" 12 gauge slug will only irritate a bad guy poking around in your jewelry box or unhooking your flat screen TV. Nobody wants to get shot and at in house distance even if you do not kill them you will make them try to find another address besides yours to lick their wounds in. The dead ones you will find in your yard the live ones the police will pick up at the local Emergency Room begging for drugs while the staff ever so gently plucks little round balls of lead from their hide.

I use #4 shot myself because I do not want to penetrate the walls of my house with slugs since I have family on the other side of the walls. I use slugs in my 20 gauge for deer hunting but I am talking about 60 to 100 yard deer not boogerman at 20' or less. I have slugs of various and sundry types and brands, 00, 000, #3, #4 shot, #6 shot, 7 1/2 shot and #9 shot for my 20 gauge but I use #6 or #4 for turkey and home defense. It is what I am comfortable with and if #6 is all you have you are not unarmed.

I agree with using #4 or 6 shot when you are looking at feet not yards,I will save my slugs for deer .I live in a moble home park and I sure dont want to use slugs an kill the guy next door asleep in his bed. I dont believe the law would buy that as self defence.

Slugs will probably only go through walls if you miss. I have 000 for my double barrel, and I'm afraid of the pattern spreading out too much and a pellot going through a wall. So, I now have a slug gun too and my intention is to use low power 2 3/4 inch slugs, hollow points if I can find them in rifled slugs, sabot slugs cost too much and aren't worth the price for close distances. Saving the $21 for 5 shells for deer hunting.

I'll say this again as this crops up every couple months or so...Rio 20 Gauge Buckshot is NOT 00Buck...no matter if the various businesses keep repeating bad information. Their pellet size is .29"...closer to #1 Buck.

Edit to add: Without buying it, I'm betting on a math error to boot. #2 buck stacks in layers of three...#1 Buck stacks in layers of two. Assuming what they say is true (.29"), the last layer would only be one pellet. It just doesn't compute. 9 #1's weigh in at 360 gr. or roughly 4/5 oz. A claimed 1330 fps. out of a just < 7/8 ounce load in a 20??? It can be done BUT.

9 #2 Bucks weigh in at 260 gr. or ~5/8 oz. In a 20 gauge hitting 1330 fps. with that load should be easily in reach.

Never saw that table before and I'm not doubting your word because I'm not surprised. 00 is supposed to be .330 and what I have is .327". I don't think whatever you shoot is going to be impressed with the fine technical details.

This is what I'm doing for now, First shot #6 bird, next four are HP rifled slug's. Nojn in the chamber. I don't think they (Walmart) sell buck shot so I'll wait, no big deal.

I buy slugs for deer and #2 or #3 buck for HD and coyotes... All are 2 3/4 inch and all have been federals for quite some time...

I've got a Big 5 sporting goods about 2 mile from me, I'll check them out tomorrow for #2 or #3 Buckshot's, I'm not going to lose sleep with my .44s, .357s, 9mm's, Tokarev's. and my 22LR.

I can deal with that, as long as your willing to sucking on end of a "BOOOOMMMM!!!!" lights out.

I guess I could fallow up with a Buffalo Bore 340g 44mag +p+ with my Redhawk to stick it home, invitations only.

Today I got some Remington* 20ga 2 3/4 #3 Buck's. I took a beating at $8.95 for five, they declined to just selling me one round at $2.

Now it's two #3 bucks first shots, and then three slugs. That aught to do it!

Sorry dude for the hassel. 20 Ga works fine. The recoil is a lot milder on a person than 12. 20GA has been around for years. I stil have my Granddads 2X shotgun which is a 20. He was a farmer before and during the depression. He killed a good many foxes going after the chickens.

I read some good reports on that Remington ammo you purchased and bought some myself. I think one of my future purchases will be one of the Lee #4 buckshot molds so I can make my own buckshot and load my own up using my MEC loader. That buckshot ammo is expensive.

I went to a murder/suicide scene where the weapon used was a 410 with buckshot. It was unreal the damage done. 20g will work just fine I would not use bird shot for hd but its better then nothing.

I picked up a couple of boxes of the #2 federal 3" 20ga buckshot. Its as good a 20 ga hd round as any I've seen. Pretty brutal at close range... And slightly more forgiving at adrenaline influenced aiming than a slug. It was kind of pricey... $8/5 at a local gunshop. I could probably find it cheaper elsewhere if I looked. I can afford to practice a lot more with my 12ga.

If we're out shooting clays at the property and we get any aggressive coyotes or coy dogs visiting... I'll be glad to have a few rounds of this around.
