Full sized 9mm for under $400?
Looking to buy my first handgun and don't really have a lot of money to throw around. I figured a nine would be functional and good to learn on. I know it's a bit of a broad request but if you guys had any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

Glock 17 is ALMOST in your price range. But have you considered a 22?
http://www.ruger.com/products/sr22Pistol/models.html That'll get your skills sharp assuming you can find 22 ammo these days, and MUCH cheaper if you're gunna shoot 1000 rounds to train.

It's already out...I'm a sigma owner/lover! The S&W SD9VE may be right, price-wise at least. Probably my next pistol. Try a few different ones. Tri-Star or Canik 100, Ruger P95 are a couple of others you can find at or near that price. Good luck, have fun!

Can't go wrong with the Sig Sauer SP2022. Was my first handgun and I've never come close to regretting the purchase. Don't shoot it as much anymore, but it always seems to make it's way out to the range for new shooters after they've gotten comfortable with the .22.

Well I've already got a ruger 22 target pistol and I'm aware that a 45 might be a better self defense round but I figure for a gun that's only going to be used at the range and maybe in some extreme situation home defense my wallets going to appreciate a nine. Maybe I'm wrong but I figure a lot of people still depend on a nine so it can't be that bad of a round.

If somebody knows of a 45 for cheap I'd consider that too ill eventually just get both anyways.

I paid $399 plus tax last weekend for my Stoeger Cougar chambered in .40 S&W. I loved how it felt in my hand and it has a pretty good reputation.

I was in a similar boat not too long ago. I created a new thread as well for what I was considering. One of my criteria I was looking for was a manual safety lever. The pistol I was considering was a Taurus PT809 in the $350 range. After getting some feedback I decided to spend a little more to get a little more quality. I purchased a Beretta PX4 Storm for $499 at my local shop.

At $400, you are probably looking used. I got my carry gun (CZ-75BD in 9mm) for about $480 used at a gun shop near me. I would second the chorus of folks suggesting the p95- excellent weapon. I would also humbly suggest looking at a Sig p250- the modular design makes it easy to swicth calibers or sizes with the right X-change kit. You might want a full size .45 and a subcompact 9mm, and get the gun and conversion kit for a total investment of about $650. It's not a bad little gun, and makes switching calibers easy.

The SD9VE is a good option. Ruger P95 is good too. Really depends on if you prefer a striker or da/sa trigger.

Why not save your money for another couple of months and get one in the $500-$600 range, like a Glock or Springfield? (Or just one more month, and get a used version of those in the $400-$500 range?)

Yep, $409.00 is a great price. Would have bought it myself if I hadn't just bought a Sig P220 carry yesterday.
