Just got my first shotgun!

So, I decided it was time to get a shotgun for home defense as well as some clay shooting. I decided to settle on a used Remington 870 Wingmaster in 12 gauge with a 26" barrel.

It cost me $330 and appears to be well taken care of. The finish is just fine with no visible scratches or dents in the wood and only a few very minor scratches here and there in the metal. I'll be taking this thing out to shoot very soon to be certain, and if any problems arise (which I hope none does given the gun store I bought it at is quite reputable where I live), I can take it back to the store to have their gunsmith look at it for free.

This is my first shotgun, and after hearing rave reviews about the Remington 870 Wingmaster, I decided to get one for myself!

Congratulations on your acquisition. May I suggest that your peruse the owners manual before heading to the firing line. If your used Wingmaster didn't come with an instruction manual, download one by clicking here.

870 Wingmaster for clay shooting .... I am SO jealous! I so wanted a Wingmaster but could not find one ....... then the rifle and reloading bugs bit, and I have made do with lesser shotguns.....

Any shotgun with a 26" barrel for HD ....... I am thinking that barrel is a bit..... unweildy? for that task..... At indoor distances, the extra barrel length won't help your swing/accuracy any and may halt your swing when it hits a doorframe or such...... bad ju-ju, when you really, REALLY need to shoot somebody.

I agree that the 26" barrel is not the best for home defense, and further down the road I may invest in a 18" barrel. However, given the odds of my house being broken in are extremely small, and a 26" barrel, while not ideal, still works for home defense, I figured I would just go for a barrel long enough for some sport shooting.

Worst case scenario, I still have my SIG if I feel the barrel is an issue.
