rem 700 ACR vs browning abolt stainless stalker
need advice... planning on purchasing a rifle for deer hunting in Alberta...have decided on 270. I have hunted for number of years with a 308 browning bar which works well.
I am trading in some other old guns and thought I might get a new gun...I have decided on a 270. I thought I might do something different and get synthetic stock and stainless barrel. Anybody have advice on rem 700 ACR vs browning abolt stainless stalker? What are the advantages and /or disadvantages of stainless steel barrel over conventional barrel? What about BOSS system? is this a gimmick? Finally should I get 270 win or 270 WSM? Thanks for your help... |

270 Win would be a good choice, been around forever, ammo is easy to buy anywhere and reasonable price.
Stainless barrel is good, less chance of corrosion longer life too and as it is easier to machine they tend to be better out of the box accuracy. Boss system is not exactly a gimmick but it is finnicky and has to be changed for different bullets, if the rifle wont shoot well the boss wont fix it. I took mine back after two weeks due to a faulty bolt and they were talking three months to get another. Got four Rem 700s all great out of the box and real tack drivers. The WSM wont give you anything the std 270 will not do in real terms and ammo is dearer and harder to get, barrel life will be shorter for a gain of a few fps. I think you mean the XCR which is the current model with extra corrosion protection, great rifle you would not be sorry doing a deal for that.

thanks for the advice...I think I will go stainless and skip the boss for now. 270 sounds good.
thanks |

Go with the A-bolt in .270 without the boss. The Browning is a much nicer gun than the Remmy.

get the browning. Its a much nicer rifle, with a much nicer trigger, and better finished.

The Boss is not a gimmick. If you are willing to put in the range time to tune it you can get slightly better accuracy than without the Boss. That being said they're ugly as hell and youn certainly don't need the muzzle break feature on a .270. The A-Bolt and the M700 are both great rifles. BUT, look at what the custom rifle makers use, Remington 700 actions, same as the Army and Marine sniper teams.
