Gun - no ammo!

I received a .223 AR-15 as a gift and here it is, 2 days after Christmas, and 8 miles away is Cabelas....no brass, no loaded ammo. No Winchester SR primers. I checked Midway, Nachez, CheaperThanDirt, Starline, Weidner's, and MidSouth on the Internet- all out of stock. Wow! Is everyone stocking up or did the military grab it all?

Yep, the American stock up is on. If you don't have it now good luck.

Just wait a couple of weeks then try to find some primers. Anybody getting Deja Vu of four years ago?

If you aren't currently reloading, you may need to consider starting. I suspect the panic buying will continue for a while (it certainly did four years ago!)

Hope you got a sack full of magazines because they are going faster than the ammo!

I have some .223 brass I've collected for my future .223/5.56; mostly stuff I've picked up a a LEO range. Let me know if you can't get hold of some locally and we will work something out. Lot of folks don't reload .223 so you might check local ranges who sell the brass for scrap. Maybe even check the scrap yard. Know any other reloaders? Ask them if they could spare a couple hundred cases.

My LGS just restocked with a shelf full of primers. The last gun scare caused them to go from $20/ box to $40. So far they haven't gouged more.

Poor substitute, but a useful accessory would be a 22 rimfire conversion kit. At least you could warm the barrel.

Powder Valley still has Tula small rifle primers in stock and the price is good too. I suggest getting at least 5k to offset HAS-MAT and shipping.

Yup.... Thats why I have 3000 once fired brass on hand and 2000 projectiles and 16 pounds of WC844 powder, and 5000 primers. Hope thats enough to get past the buying binge.
I saw on one of the local gun site. There is 223 avalible if you want to pay $11 for that $5 steel cased Wolf ammo.

Hopefully things will calm down soon. I'm looking to get into reloading this late winter/spring and It would be pretty discouraging if I can not get the materials to produce ammo.

The artificial shortage four years ago was due to people hoarding components for an imagined problem. Now it is starting all over. This time however look for the assult weapons ban to return because of the recent shootings. Components will return as they did four years ago. The manufacturers have got to love it. The sky is falling!

Stopped by a local gun shop this morning just to browse. Asked if they had any .223 ammo expecting to hear 'no'. Was surprised to be told they did with a 100 rd. maximum purchased allowed. Walked out smiling with 100 rds. that I never expected to find. First I've found in the local area.
