My best loads in both .223 and .308 have all come with H335 and Remington 7 1/2 primers. H335 was developed by Winchester especially for the .223.
AA2230 and W748 work well for me also, but not quire as well as H335. I've never tried "stick" powders in the .223. But then, I try to avoid stick powders in all calibers.

powder selection for AR-15
One factor I haven't seen mentioned is an AR-15 is gas operated. That can mean a wonderful powder for a 26''bbl bolt gun may not be happy in a H-bar Carbine.
Look at what NRA Hi-power shooters are using is a good bet. My experience with 1-9 twist 16'' Hbar shows both 69 gr MK's and Nos Comps with Varget give 2780 velocity, good semi-auto cycle, good cleanliness in bolt/carrier,and nickle to quarter size groups at 100 yds. I won't claim Varget as the ultimate, but its temperature tolerance and versatility (17 mach 4 to 45-70,and superb .308) mean an 8 lb can of Varget simplifies powder inventory. With all due respect to Vvi powders, does your local shop keep them in stock? Can you load or do you have to locate powder first? |
