You didn't say, but does he own a .45?
And if not, does the family consider him "the strange brother"?

As long as his pants do not catch fire I do not think anything will happen.
Serously I have had multiple times of having a loose round in my pocket during hunting season. I have had a few that have gone though the washer, and dryer with no problems. Heck I shot them just to see if they would still work. They all did.

Have him cary one of these instead:
They are silver bullion in the shape of a .45acp cartridge (1 oz). They also make them in .308 (2 oz), .50 BMG (10 oz) and 20mm rounds (25 oz). They're called Silver Bullet Bullion.

It's not the bullet you have to worry about. It's the case. Think about it, the case is lighter than the bullet, so without something to hold it in place, if it discharges, the case will go flying. Not the bullet itself.
Not that I would rather get hit with a flying 45acp case, but I'm just saying.

actually the case would just split remember the brass isnt in itself strong enough to contain the blast its the chamber supporting it. bullets that detonate outside a gun normally pop like fire crackers. mot saying they arent dangerous just not as dangerous as a round in a chamber

I know there is almost no danger of it going off but personally I don't like to carry loose ammo in my pockets, they tend to stay in the mag.

Actually, the biggest concern isn't the bullet or the case, it's the primer.
If the primer detonates, and it's not crimped, it can be blown out of the case at very high velocity and can do quite a bit of damage at short range. But as the primer cup is very light, its range is very limited.
