What is it?

I got these pictures on one of my game cameras. Some of the local critters that it definitely isn't:

squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote, bobcat, chipmunk, dog, cat

Is it a groundhog? Maybe a youg one?

By the way, that is one of my deer salt licks that it is in.

I cannot be sure, but it could very well be a ground hog. Do you have them in your area?

I've heard it said that they are quite tasty. We don't have them down here or I would have personally verified that.

Woodchuck is only decent if it's small and young. Otherwise it gets too tough and gamey.

Even then, you want to stew it for a good long while.

Yes, it looks like a groundhog/woodchuck to me. Some of the old timers around here also call them hedgehogs because they would see them up in the hedge trees of the hedgerows.
I had some take up residence in my barn and they sure played havac burrowing in the dirt floor before I got rid of them.

I would say so and one that is having a bad hair-day. I'm basing this primarily by the look of his tail. Have to admit that the ones I usually see are closer to the ground and not quite as frizzy-haired. .....

When I was a kid I shot one with my Crossman 760. Hit it right in the side. It just looked at me, laughed, and kept on eating grass. I thought, "dang", I better not tick this thing off and slunk away.

Man its diggin that salt lick. I'll store that away for my varmint shooting days.

It does look very similar to a groundhog. And that is the only native animal in North Alabama that it could be. However the ones I am used to seeing are about twice as big (of course, as I stated, it could be a young one), have more brownish hair, and it doesn't stick out like that. As for being closer to the ground, they are built for digging tunnels. The tunnel doesn't have to be as tall that way.

I looked up pictures of a muskrat. It doesn't appear to be one.

That reminds me. I got a picture of a coyote at one of my salt licks. And yes that was about a 15 inch snow storm that hit North Alabama. We get one about every 20 years.

Definitely a woodchuck/groundhog. Doesn't look abnormal in the least to me. I've killed hundreds and hundreds of them. They pretty much look like that guy.
