.41 Mag and 210 Nosler JHP Max Load!

Good morning.

I tried some Nosler 210 gr JHPs using W296 in my Ruger BlackHawk this weekend. I did not shoot groups, just tried different loads looking for any problems. I did not see any pressure signs but the max loads were quite stout!

I used CCI 300 primers and new Starline brass.

The max load listed in the Nosler manual is 20.4gr. I noticed that at 20.0 gr, the recoil was huge. The 20.4 grain load was a handfull, to say the least!

Has anyone else used this combo in their .41 mag? How was the recoil?

nobody said a heavy 41 mag load didn't have some recoil. it just isn't as much as a 44 mag. as a side note it is usually suggested that WW-296/H-110 use magnum primers

steveno, Rodger on the mag primers, but both the Lyman 49th and the Nosler manuals listed standard primers for both the 296/110. I think I am going to chrony the 20.4gr load and see where the velocities come in. If they are fairly wide, a mag primer may help.

Anyway, the recoil of this load in my Blackhawk seems way stiffer than stout loads in my 629. Grip design, maybe?

I quit using H-110/Win 296 when I switched to AA#9. It has a lot more flexibility in its use. I can use it for cast lead bullets, and jacketed. At max loads it gets to within a few FPS of 110/296. Also it has way less flash.

I think the grip shape has a lot to do with felt recoil. I have a blackhawk 41 mag with 6.5 inch and it feels different from the two S & W M-57's (4 & 6 inch barrels) that I have.

I put wood Houge grips on mine. They made it a lot more comfortable to shoot with. Especialy with the warmer loads.

I was thinking about the Hogue rubbers made for the Blackhawk. I like the idea of packing this gun in the bear woods instead of my .44 S&W 629 because it is much lighter and looks more "cowboy". But I need to do something about the recoil. I was thinking of loading some heavier solids, but after fireing these Noslers at max, I'm having second thoughts. I don't want to drop my gun after the first shot at Mr. Brown!

N110

Try Viht N110 in your 41 Mag.
It has less flash/blast than H110, is just as fast and can be backed down to moderate loads.

IME AA9 is the best compromise high-performance 41 Magnum choice; it offers the best accuracy at higher velocities.

H110 and W296 provide the highest velocities.

I load 20.5 grains of WW296/H110 and a magnum primer with the 210 grain jacketed bullet for all my 41s. Never had a problem, shoots great in all of them, and simply dribbles a deer, black bear or hog.

Your correct, Crowbeaner, I need to man up and enjoy the full load .41! I think it may be my new favorite. I am adding some soft rubber grips, though!

.41 mag heavy loads

I love my 41's !! A Ruger BlackHawk 4-5/8" Bbl and a Smith & Wesson Mountain Gun 4" Bbl.
My heavy loads are with Hornady XTP's or Speer Gold Dots(210 grns) over 19.5 grns H-110 with Winchester large pistol primers, good for standard or magnum loads. 1300 fps(these are pretty stout in my guns).
The BH grip rolls better in my hand and I put a Limbsaver stickey pad on the Smith grip and use a padded shooting glove.
For light loads I use a 215grn hardcast SWC over 10.5 grns of HS-6 or 8.5 grns of Green Dot. 1050fps
All of these loads group consistently in both guns and hover around 2" @ 25 yds and 4" @ 50yds I haven't shot any farther than that.
Looking for the right deal on a Super BlackHawk Hunter in .41 as my next one.

I cannot speak to the latest Nosler Manual but the Lyman 49th lists a WLP (Winchester Large Pistol) primer. Winchester only makes one large pistol primer and it's rated for both standard and magnum loads. In essence, it's a magnum primer. Further, the propellant's manufacturer and most other publishers of loading data specify a magnum primer for these two propellants and for a reason.

I've been shooting these two powders since the late 1970's and they need a magnum primer. A one time, I was going thru H110 by the 8 pound caddies so I'm more than a little familiar with it.

Nosler .41 Magnum reloads

I load my .41 Magnum[s] with:
210/220 grain 17.5 grains of 2400
My wife loads 9.3 grains of UNIQUE.
According to the "books" both produce the same velocity.
