My SP2022 9mm has a partiality to Golden Saber.
The rest is accurate enough (including XTP Hornady hand-loads) but when I do the occasional shot with the GS it nails the bullesye. Its an odd duck to hand-load (odd duck period with its bore rider design) and I can only say in factory it the best of anything I can conjure up (and I have tired a fair variety). 25 rds per box not 20. Basically I think they are all more than adequate for HD and its a matter of cost and availability . I would not hesitate with any of them (and the 2022 eats anything just fine). I do like tack driving accuracy ergo the GS preference (I will carry handloads in the spare mag, but the main mag has factory GS in it) . |

Fiocchi doesn't get mentioned in these discussions very often, but check out their Extrema line, which uses Hornady XTPs. I use the 124-grain Extrema 9mm in my CCW (Beretta PX4 sub) and have had good results with it in my other 9mm handguns and carbine as well. Otherwise, it's GS for me too.

I am a huge fan of the standard pressure 147-gr. HST load. Recoils like 115-gr. FMJ practice ammo, penetrates to about 13-14" with expansion to at least .6 inches.

I use standar pressure Hornady Critical Defense in all my SD guns, including my nightstan 1911 and my EDC Kahr PM9 .. also have them in my NAA Pug in .22mag and in my Taurus 617 .357 mag ... the round is extremely accurate for me, and I love the design which allows the bullet to fully expand under most conditions ... haven't tried to buy any ammo in about two months, so have no idea what's on the shelves -- or if they're bare -- but I love CD ammo ...

+1 to bikerbill's comments on Hornady Critical Defense. That's all I use in my carry pistols (STI Guardian in 9mm and STI Ranger in .45ACP) and it's what I have my wife use in her .380 Sig P238. They feed great and have excellent ballistics performance.
Check out tnoutdoors9 channel on you tube for a lot of very good performance testing of JHP handgun ammunition from many manufacturers.

My Sig Sauer SP2022 will shoot anything you put in it. As for my personal choice for a defensive carry round, I am carrying Federal HST 9mm 124 gr +P. I also like the Hornady Critical Duty and Speer Gold Dot. I paid $32 for a 50 round box of the Federal HST at ammotogo.com

In reference to pricing,
Underwood Gold Dots are in boxes of 50 for a out $25 in 9mm and around that range for other calibers. Fiocchi I believe is somewhere thereabout. I am positive only for .32acp loaded with Hornady XTP, it is around $23 per 50 last time I bought some. This is the load my girl carries in my 1903 Hammerless, great performance and 1000FPS In .32 is great. I thinks it's a tad higher out of the 3.75 barrel, maybe 1050. Fiocchi is good stuff in any caliber. TNOUTDOORS9 is a great source of info and comparison. Good ol' Hickok45 for some good ol' shootin' |
