handprint gun vault?
Hey all.
Lookin for a nice two pistolish gun safe but for a couple of new shooter friends for CHRISTmas. Id like one that operates simply by hand or fingerprint...no codes. Can anyone give me advice? I like the biometric gunvault ones but get confused because they all show handprints but say they work off codes?? Tnx for any help. RR |

I don't think that anyone is making a handgun safe that operates on your handprint. The brand you mention uses their handprint logo to place your fingers over the 4 buttons to punch your code in and open the electronic lock.
They also offer a biometric fingerprint reader on some of their models. Some people have problems getting their prints to register properly for reliable operation and you should consider some of the known factors. Dry or oily hands, a cut, dirt, paint, blood, etc., all effect the readers ability to work properly. I know there are better quality readers out there than some are using. Cost is certainly a factor. The false acceptance rates vary greatly among manufacturers and they don't seem to openly disclose the rates. I have heard it ranges from 1 in 5000, which is common on handgun safes to 1 in 100,000. The company that claims the better rate sells theirs for around $300.00. http://www.biometricnewsportal.com/b...ics_issues.asp All these factors is why I still prefer a mechanical pushbutton lock on mine. |

I would stick with a simple, non electrical, safe.
To bet my life on a $200 or so item which has a lot of moving parts, needs power, and has some known issues is not for me. Years ago I had a bad cut on my index finger. Couldn't submit fingerprint cards till it healed up. I'm sure an inexpensive safe wouldn't have been able to read it either at that time. The Knox Pistol safe is a quality option, built well, proven Simplex lock, and will hold 2 pistols. Not as cool as the bio option but it's going to work every time.

They make them in various sizes. Check the reviews, this sort of thing is awesome if it works but annoying when it doesn't. |
