retumbo for 25-06 and 270 wsm?

I have a 270 wsm and soon may have a 25-06. How would retumbo work with heavy bullets in these calibers. And the 25-06 will have a 26 inch barrel. What kind of velocity should i expect.

Neither powder choice nor velocity are necessarily predictable without knowing the bullet you intend to shoot.

Well if I get the 25-06 I will most likely be shooting a 110 grain accubond or a 120 grain sierra hpbt game king.

And the wsm most likely a 150 grain bowler ballistic tip.

I had best performance with IMR4350 over R19 and R22 for 270WSM.

I like R22 for 25-06.

For 270WSM with 150gr Nosler BT, QuickLoad thinks your best powder without going heavily compressed would be:

Ramshot Magnum
VVH N560
Accurate MagPro
IMR 7828 (and/or ssc)
RL-22

There is only about 30fps difference between them.

For .25-06 with 120gr Sierra, it thinks:

VVH N560
Ramshot Magnum
IMR 7828 (and/or ssc)
Accurate MagPro
RL-22

There is only about 35fps difference between them.

Velocity in the .25-06 with that bullet in a 26" barrel is expected to be 3,275-ish.

Retumbo loads would be 108% compressed and 150fps slower.

Thanks brian. In my nosler manual it looks as though ma pro will yield the best velocity with the wsm. But no data for the -06

Also I think when I begin load development I want a very slow powder. Also I am going to start at min loads with magnum primers. Work up from there. I know it may not be the norm but a powder like retumbo seems slow to me for a quarter bore. So I will use the magnum primers to facilitate more uniform burning and try to get it all burned up by the time it leaves the barrel

Retumbo is very, very slow for the 25-06.

Starting charges are going to approach 100% load density and you'd be lucky to pack enough in the case to reach max pressure.

The Retumbo is an excellent choice for the 270 WSM. My partner has a load using the Nosler 140 gr. Accubonds with 71 grs of this powder and Federal 215M primers using fired Fusion ammo cases and will shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yds. consistantly in warm or very cold temperatures. As I recall we checked these with a chrony and were knocking on 3,300 fps. This was a load we worked up to based on an article from one of the gun magazines when this cartrige first came out. Accuracy came on just exactly where theirs had in a different rifle. He shoots a basic model 70 Winchester with the synthetic stock as is from the factory.

Brian that's why I was thinking using the magnum primer with the retumbo in the 25-06. Seems if I can get more of the powder lit at once may facilitate getting the pressure up and therefore curbing the velocities between the other powders. Also it seems it would shoot well with a slow powder packed full and a magnum primer.

One problem with the WSM is load density with most bullets. If you took 71gr Retumbo and seated a 140gr AB you have pretty compress load for the 270WSM.

Hodgdon has max load of 71gr/Retumbo for the 270WSM with 140gr @ 3165fps and it's listed (C) compress same with H-1000.

I've tried H-1000,Mag-Pro,Magnum,R-22,R-19 with 140 and 150gr bullets in a custom 270WSM it had 26" long Lawton barrel.

I finally settled on R-17 for the 270WSM and 300WSM most bullets for the 270WSM your going to be seating the base of that bullet into the case body. Well good luck

Retumbo in 25-06

I worked up a load using 110 gr Accubonds and WLR primers with Retumbo. 24 inch barrel Ruger Rifle. Velocities matched Nosler's data pretty closely. 0.2 gr below max yielded great groups. I highly recommend Retumbo and the 110 Accubonds.

I get excellent results shooting 115 grain Nosler BT bullets over a full case of Retumbo using CCI magnum primers. The Sierra 120 grain Game Kings are a good choice too. No experience with some of the other bullets others have mentioned but just about anything in the weight class should work well with Retumbo. My gun is a Ruger #1V with a 24" bull barrell.
