Depends on the slug. Rifled slugs become fairly inaccurate out past 100-150 or so yards. You can usually get up to 200 yards with decent accuracy from sabot slugs shot from a rifled barrel. Much farther than that and they're still lethal, it's just that they drop a LOT and you'll be lucky to hit anything.

The other idea depends upon the shooter. Two hundred yards might be fine for some but some others may find themselves challenged at fifty yards. Pete

My effective range of accuracy is 100 MAX. I prefer to keep my shots in at 60-80. The slug carries alot of energy but others know much more about the ballistics then I do.

I can't recall the figures for slugs, but I'll look it up when I get home (Hunters Ed Instructor Manual).
00 buckshot retains enough energy to be dangerous to people/animals/structures to 600 yds. I'd expect rifled slugs to retain their energy a little farther. They also start off at higher velocity than buckshot (about 1600fps as opposed to 1300 fps in 2 3/4")

Nice general question. However, in the real world specifics are necessary. There are many types of slugs, and many types of barrels. What is YOUR pleasure.

I am not trying to be evasive or snotty, just to point out the complexity of the subject. On the personal level I have made a couple of solid ragged groups at 100 yrd with a 12 GA paradox cantilevered rifled barrel and a 4X scope. I would not want to bet I could do it on demand.
