winchester 1890

I went to a game farm and recieved a free winchester 1890 reciever and barrel, it had burned in a fire. I am restoring it and I was wondering if i should use wd40 because its so cheap. I know that using wd40 is usually a bad idea, but i dont have much money. It is not rusted too bad, mostly it is a bunch of charcoal and burnt stuff
