500 plated vs jacketed loads at distance

i posted something similar in the revolver thread. there i'm more looking for technique info more than hand loading info.

So here's my question. I'm shooting the following

500 s&w performance center 10.5 inch with ultradot matchdot and bipod. ultradot is being used at the 1 moa dot size.

300 grain rainer plated bullet, 25.0 grains power pistol, CCI large rifle primer

my best guess on velocity is about 1500-1600 ft/sec.

I'm getting roughly 2-3 inch groups at 25 yards, but when i go out to 100 yards, it becomes huge (16-20 inches at least) and pretty inconsistent (not a nice group)

Is it the bullet? the velocity?

I'm okay with loading the ranier down more if its the speed that is destabilizing it or something. I have a hotter load using 300 gr FTX with 50.0 grains H110 that i haven't tried at either yardage with this gun yet.

Any ideas or loads i should try?

thanks ahead guys!

Not to avoid your original question but, do you have published data for the H110 load you threw out there? I did a quick search on Hodgdon's sight and they call for max weight of 45 grs with a 275 grain Barnes XPB. Just seems kinda hot and you mentioned you haven't shot it yet. If it's a safe load than I say hold the holy crap on and try those full house 110's.

If you're using the gun for hunting and I'm betting you are, I like W296/H110 for that purpose. I don't so much for practice. Excessive use of the either of the two is known to cause top strap fire erosion. I have a S&W 629 44 Mag that I use W296 for my deer hunting loads. I can shoot about baseball to softball accurate at 100 yards for a six shot group. I shoot with shooting sticks and have an Eotech holographic for my sight FWIW.

I have shot the h110@ 50.0 grains, probably about 100 rounds. Il try to dig up the hornady document with the load.

Your load of 25 gr of Power Pistol seems to be within safe parameters, but you are over driving the bullets. It says right on Rainier's website that 1200-1250 fps is the max velocity for their bullets' best performance.
