I have been using Bullseye, Unique and SR 4756 for .38/.38+P loads. My question is; can anyone recommend a cleaner burning powder than these?

Absolutely!
Try Hodgdon Universal Clays or Alliant Power Pistol. Both work well in the 38 case, and both have proven to be very clean, based on specific loads. Universal Clays seems to give less flash..... ------------------ "All my ammo is factory ammo" |

Hodgdon's Titegroup is a very clean burner; it burns lightly slower than Bullseye.
BTW, is hankrearden a real name, or have you adopted the persona of a certain fictional steel manufacturer? Atlas will shrug! Jack |

No, its not my real name. As you probably guessed, its the name of a fictional charachter who happens to be one of my heros.
Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll have to try something new. Bullseye, what awful stuff! It will leave your holster filthy! I remember one of my few trips to an indoor range. I had it all to myself. After fifty rounds of so, it looked like I had loaded my .38s with Blackpowder instead of Bullseye. The guy running the range, came in to check and make sure that his airhandlers were working! Dirty, stinking stuff! |

If I had simply looked at your profile I wouldn't have had to ask that question about your moniker; the profile makes it perfectly clear. Either that or it was quite a coincidence on the part of your parents!
Are you using cast or jacketed bullets? Unique is very dirty when using cast bullets, but much cleaner with jacketed stuff. Jack [This message has been edited by Jack Straw (edited November 24, 1999).] |

Cast, jacketed, and mostly swaged bullets. Dirty burn isn't much of a problem with +P+ and magnum jacketed bullts. Its a different story though with standard pressure lead.

Try CLAYS. It is one of the cleanest burners out there.
TiteGroup is excellent in the .45 ACP and the 9mm. I haven't tried it in the .38 but it should work equally well. |

700X has always burned clean for me in a target load. 2.5gr with a 148gr wadcutter.
