I second the scraping with a copper penny. Works great on individual spots.

Pennies minted 1981 or earlier were copper. Sometime in 1982 they started using zinc. Check the date before you start rubbing it on your firearm.

If you have some Romex or just about any other copper-colored wire in the garage it should be copper.
