Ruger 10/22 Sights: How Do You Get 'Em Off?
Anybody know what it takes to remove the front and rear sights on a Ruger 10/22?
Use a Hammer and punch? Use a vice to hold the barrel steady? Use dynamite and blasting caps? I'm planning on replacing the factory sights with something better. If anyone knows of good replacement sights, post it here. And how would I go about installing new sights? Stupid Ruger 10/22 Owner's Manual doesn't mention anything about this.... Does Bill Ruger think we are Frigging Mind Readers or what? Thanks, Slim.... |

I don't have one in the shop right now to look at nor does my exploded view show the sight separate from the barrel but I was thinking they were a standard rifle bead in a dovetail. I think the band is press fit on the barrel. I'd contact Ruger to be sure but if it is press fit then you might want to heat it a little before driving it off. George

You'll need a barrel vise and a nylon punch, or a sight pusher. Heating the barrel is a good suggestion.
"Fire sights" are said to be good. Brownell's is a good place to find sights, also Natchez. Good luck. |

Even if you make barrel blocks, be sure to place a 22 drill rod into the barrel before you clamp it into any vise. This reenforces the barrel and prevents collasping. BTW, both front and rear are pressed in and a drift and hammer will drive either out.

I'll be phoning Ruger to check on how to replace those sights.
I'd buy a new barrel from Butler Creek or one of their competitors but I don't think I've seen any that have front sights on them as the barrels are meant for use with a scope. Thanks to everybody for giving me information to work with! Sincerely, Slim |
