45 GAP primers?????

Never gave the 45 GAP much thought until last week when I was at the range and the shooter at the next position was blazing away with one.
When he left he didn’t clean up his brass so when I was picking up mine I got some of the GAP.
When I looked at it for the first time I was surprised that the round uses small primers.
Any one know why they use small primers?

I guess they don't need the large primer with the shorter case

Pure guess in on my part but perhaps to make it easy to identify ACP from GAP cases.
They are so close in dimension it is easier to just look at the primer.
Modern powders and primers being more efficient than when John Browning designed the 1911 the SP works more than fine in such a case.

I wouldn't be suprised

If they are a small magnum primer, with a mixture with 11 different herbs and spices, that gives about the same flash size as a standard large pistol primer. The small primer pocket probably gives the butt of the case more strength, and the other 2 posters are probably right on the mark too

I haven't talked to Gaston this week, but it MIGHT be the same reason the .40 uses a small primer while the 10mm uses large. That is to reduce the risk of the ejector hitting the primer when clearing a live round.
