Springfield model 1903 mk1 WCF 270 cal.

I am looking for information on a Springfield model 1903 mark 1 in WCF 270 cal. This rifle was a presentation peice given to a family member.
Is this rifle a one off or did a lot of old military surplus rifles get switched to different cal? Any info would be great and a value would also help so I can insure it. The rifle is in perfect condition and has been a wall hanger. I donot think it has been fired since it was rechambered or rebarreled.

Thousands and thousands of military surplus rifles have been sporterized over the years, to include new barrels in about any caliber compatible with the action.

It is now thought to be Desecration of a Historical Artifact and Devaluation of a Valuable Collector's Item, but when I paid $39.50 for my Mk I in Newberry's Five and Dime about 1962, it was a sensible thing to do (Although I didn't, GI was good enough for me.)

I would expect a Springfield with a .270 barrel to have been restocked and fitted with scope or receiver sight. Can you post pictures?

Dollar value will be only a few hundred unless you can prove it was built by a nationally known gunsmith or presented at some official function.

And it could be potentially dangerous to fire, if the receiver's one of the "low-numbered" Springfield's, numbered below SN 800,000.

All Mk Is (Pedersen device guns) are double heat treated, plenty strong and smoother in operation than the later nickel steel actions.

This double heat treat is in 35 Whelen. It was customized before 03's got expensive.
