M1917 Rifle Issue Info?

Greetings,

I have just purchased a US Rifle of 1917 (Eddystone) in very good condition. I have been able to track down the manuf. date by serial number as July/1918. I am looking for any advice on finding out where is was sent after that, and what unit it was issued to. I am hoping to find out if it was shipped "Over There". I realize records from that era may be hard to come by, if they still exist. My google-fu was not strong on this one, so I'm hoping someone may be able t help.

Thanks,
Bill

If, and it's a huge if, the records of where particular serial numbered rifles from World War One were sent, the only place I could think they might be is the national archives, as the Ordnance Department has records there for guns and small arms in the time frame your rifle was produced and accepted into service.

I doubt very much you'll even get down to the individual unit that your rifle was eventually issued to though, the Army has never been one for that sort of record keeping and reporting.

I think the Springfield Research Service does Pattern 17's too. There is a fee involved and you will not get much. I believe the records storage warehouse was burned down years ago.

This one hasn't been updated on several years.
