Felling pretty pleased with myself!
They'll be some who think that this is barely worth mentioning and I realise it is not that big a deal, but it is for me.
Today I shot at 400, 500 and 600m for the first time. Ever. I was shooting my 3-12x Burris-scoped CZ550 and used my "home-tuned" 146gn milspec ammo which previously has managed about 2-2.5MOA at 100m and 300m. The weather was fine except for a quite gusty, variable breeze of about 2.5-4m/s. Luckily this was pretty much head on. This time the target was a 12" wide metal plate. I hit it 3 out of 6 times at 400m, 2 out of 6 at 500m (I misread the wind direction: for some reason it felt like it was coming from 50 degrees left from that position) and 5 out of 12 at 600m. So, not world class, but I had a great time and I have a red patch on my scapula where I've been patting myself on the back!!

You had fun, you shot well, what's not to be happy about. Well done, wish I had some place to shoot longer ranges, hmm maybe not I don't need another addiction.

Good on you. Thanks for sharing. I wish I had those long ranges to shoot. Best I can claim is a crow at ~350 yards with my 223 bolt gun.

Yes!!! It's always a good day when you put lead on steel at distance!
Keep it up! Jimro

I think it's very cool. Never shot past 200 yards myself.

Very nice!
I too am just getting into longer range shooting. My .308 topped with a 3-15x rang steel at 500 on the first try...although I think I was a bit off on my 700yd attempt...might have to rerun my numbers! |

Thanks for the positive words of encouragement!
At the risk of being branded a tool-blamer I would like to have had a go with my 155gn Amax load which is my most accurate load at about 1 MOA at 100m with a 9-shot group. I think the best my milspec tweeked ammo (what I was shooting that day) managed was about 1.8 MOA. I'd also like to have tried my heaviest load with the 170gn lockbase. That managed smidge over 1 MOA but with 5 shots. Still all that for another time: right now just having a go was good enough!

Some other things I had not thought about this being a first for:
Shooting a gong. Taking wind into account. Using my turrets to make changes to POI beyond setting up a zero. Shooting a gong gave me no idea of my accuracy performance, which is something I usually scrutinise, but it was very satisfying to first see, then hear that gong. For all scope adjustments I used either Strelok on my smartphone or Strelok in conjunction with my Kestrel windmeter. I've never used an app like Strelok before to make changes due to distance and it really works!! So that was encouraging too.

I have to admit...
I cheat... I have ballistic drop scopes, that are actually fairly accurate for my cartridges. |

Being smart is not cheating.

Shooting at long range is fun; hitting at long range is way fun! The longer the range the more the fun, and as I have recently learned, the longer the range the more important reading wind becomes. Did I mention shooting is fun!
