With all the possible combinations for this model, it's easy to see how they could get habit forming.
When I was a kid, I had one in 20 gauge over .222 Remington.
The .222 ammo was too expensive to shoot much, so the gun kind of became just a 20 gauge single shot.
Somewhere along the line, it disappeared, probably got traded off for something or other.
Neat gun, though.

I've been interested in the Savage 24 since the early 60's. I finally have a Savage 24 Camper's Companion model, 22LR over 20 Gauge. It has a 20" bbl., straight stock, with ammo storage compartment in the stock. I looked for years before I found one. Its in VG condition and is one I would never part with. Very accurate little gun. Light and compact too. I use it from time to time to get rid of pests on my small farm. With 22 CB longs or 22 CCI Shot Shells its as quiet as a pellet gun and gets the job done.

I had a 22LR/20 gauge that was a fine little woods gun. I set it up with a Peep sight, probably a Lyman, and it worked for small game and even for deer with Rottweil Brenekkes.

No lightweight, but the 22 barrel was quite accurate. By chance, the zero with my 22 load of the time also worked well enough at 40 yards with those slugs.

too bad about your 24v 222/20.I aquired one of these as a lark and have ended up really liking this gun.it's light to carry and it packs enough pop to do the trick .i don't mind having with me in the woods all day.

Over the years, I have owned a few, in different grades and combinations. Here in the midwest, the .22 combinations are very popular for rabbit hunting in snow. One group that I know, actually schedule such a hunt. Might add that all the ones that I have owned, have had some problems, from stocks to firing pins. All have been fixable.

One question that I have is about one that my friend owns. It's a .410 over .410 and has the original plastic stock. He claims that this one is quite rare/collectable and I wonder if this is so?

Pahoo, I've run across a couple 410/410, with both plastic and wood furniture. I'm not sure of collector value, but to squirrel and rabbit hunters they're valued well.

I bought a .22/20 ga. for my son as his first gun. Must have been 30 years ago. He has never used it.

savage 24

pahoo you're probabaly talking about a savage mod 242 410 over 410
that gun uses the same reciever as the 24v in 20ga/30-30 or 357 mag/max and barrel sets are still available thru e-gun parts

Good to know and I'll take a second look, next time I see him. I know that these 24's are great little combose and wish I had some of these back. Currently I only have a a .22 over 20ga in DL grade. It's mostly a safe queen.

Be Safe !!!
