2 3/4" through a 3 in" chamber?

Hey guys got a question.. Would there be a problem with shooting a 2 3/4 round of buckshot through a shotgun marked for a 3 inch only?

There is NO SUCH THING as a chamber marked 3" only. The chamber size on a shotgun is the MAXIMUM length of shell.

Does it say 3in. only or is it just marked 3 in. I've never run across a shotgun marked as 3" that I wasn't able to use 2 3/4" with it. What type of shotgun do you have?

No problem shooting 3" or shorter shells in your gun.

I've never seen a barrel marked "3 INCH ONLY"; but, that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. Many folks get confused when they buy new Remington replacement barrels, for older guns, since they stopped making 2-3/4" chambered barrels and have 3" chambers in the replacement barrels for 2-3/4" actions.

A shogun isn't like a pistol where there's a ledge in the chamber. The shotgun's chamber transitions to the bore diameter with a tapered section known as the forcing cone. As long as the end of the opened shell doesn't enter the forcing cone, you're okay.

What barrel (and for what gun) is marked for 3" only and how exactly is the warning worded?

Thanks for the info guys.. The barrel is marked 3." most barrels I have seen are marked for both that is the reason for my question.. The Shotgun is an imported tactical shotgun. An Excort MP-A.. My wife and I saw it at the Shot show this month and fell in love with it.. It is imported by Legacy Sports International.. This is the baddest assed looking tactical shotgun we ever saw and had to have one...

Remington 1100's with 3 " chambers are "3 INCH ONLY" The 1187 with 3 " chambers will cycle both 2 3/4 and 3"

The 3" 1100 will still shoot the shorter shells safely. It just won't reliably cycle the lighter loads.

Yep it will shoot them fine. I can shoot 3.5s from my 3 inch gun but they dont eject right, any ammo for that gauge will fire and be safe but its the chamber to load through that different sizes, all barrels are the same

Firing 3.5" shells through a 3" chamber is EXTREMELY dangerous. DON"T continue to do so.

The longer shells will fit in the chamber because the chamber is cut for the shell length after it is fired and opened up. The longer shell will fit, but once fired and the shell opens there is no place for the shell to unfold. This will raise pressures to a dangerous level.

Shorter shells can be fired with no danger although they may not reliably operate many autos, but never fire a shell longer than marked on the barrel.

Pabuckslayer, Besides the issue with increased barrel pressure resulting from firing 3.5" shells in barrels chambered for 3" as mentioned by jmr40, is your receiver built for the pressure of a 3.5" or the increased pressure created by firing the 3.5 in the 3 chamber?

Yea, I have a 1187 but got a aftermarket barrel for on it, I dont do it regualry I just did it 3 shots one day when I ran out of ammo while hunting. It fires great just like my 3.5" guns, they eject mostly but they snag at the end. No jamming at all they just hang there and slid right out.

It does matter what barrel it is. If it is a 3" chamber in the barrel it not long enough for 3 1/2" shells to openwithout being in the forceing cone. It has been said on the forum many times before yes they will fit in, but it isn't a safe pactice

We should probably contact Remington, the Owner's Manual for Models 1100, 11-87 and 11-87 Super Magnum shotguns needs to be changed. Based upon pabuckslayer08's experiences, The Ten Commandments of Firearm Safety can omit the 5th Commandment, Use of Proper Ammunition, because it's no longer necessary.
