Want a .45 ACP

A local gun shop has a used Sig P220 with two mags for $700. Is that a good deal? I'm not sure where it was made or how old it is. Are there questions I should ask? What should I look for as problem areas? Thanks for you help guys and gals.

Great gun not a great price... Should be a $600 gun IMHO. You want to check and see if it is an older folded carbon steel slide or the newer stainless steel milled slide. If it is the older carbon it will should have a 2 letter date code on the underside of the front of the slide along with a German proof mark. These guns all have internal extractors.

Newer P220s will have stainless steel slides and some have internal and some have external extractors. I would pass on any internal extractor P220 unless you know what to look for. The spec on the internal extractor in stainless slides is too narrow and can be problematic. Newer stainless steel slides will have the external extractor and rail.

Many Sig fans prefer the older carbon slides but do not overpay for them. A used P220 is a $500 to $650 gun unless it is a rare configuration depending on condition of course.

I agree that the price is too high. See if you can talk them down to 600-650.

Well wait a minute folks, he didn't say "HOW" used it was, or if there were any other desireable features such as night sights, carry model, compact, or whatever. If it was in 98% or better condition- yeah, I'd jump on it no matter what all it has going on as far as specialties. Just seems kinda weird to put a value on it if nobody's seen it except for the OP.

May be an SAO or Stainless...so many options it could have that could bump it into the 700 buck used range.

Since the OP didn't mention any special features, I assume it is a regular production P220.

If the gun is in decent shape, $600 would be a reasonable price.

Buds Gun shop .com often has Sig P220 police trade-ins in the $500 range. They come with three magazines, night sights (not gauranteed to work), and are guaranteed to function reliably. Basically they just have some finish wear from being carried in a holster. I don't see them on the site right now, but keep checking. When they do get them in they don't last long.

I've gotten a used German manufactured P220 in ~95% condition for $625. I'd say $700 is a bit much and they should come down a bit.

You say that you want a full sized, single stack .45ACP that's not a 1911?
You definitely need an attitude adjustment.

Why... There is almost nothing my 1911s can do that my P220 cannot except allow me to carried cocked and locked... The 1911 is a great gun but it is a high maintence gun in comparison to the P220.

I am in total agreement with WVsig. I have a ST with the internal slide. So far (knock on wood) there have been no issues. It is something I keep an eye on.

I really love the pistol and it shoot great. I paid $540 for mine and it is a beautiful although heavy pistol. Here is a couple of pictures:

I sold my '95 220 last year for $500. I ran into three others at the gun show trying to sell theirs as well, and had to sell mine using an ad on this site.

And if you get a SAO Sig, you can carry cocked and locked. Still doesn't have the trigger of a good 1911 but it's a pretty good trigger.

It had a black finish, no night sight. I won't get another chance to look at it until this weekend.

.45 ACP

Instead of buying a used P-220 for $600 or so, how about considering a CZ97B in .45ACP, brand new from the CZ Custom Shop, for $602.00. The CZ97 can also be found NIB on Gunbroker for very similar prices.

I have a P-220 Match that is a great gun that cost $1,000 new. I also have a CZ97 that I bought used which is also a great gun and super accurate right out of the box. At this point I am not sure which one I like better but I am leaning more toward the CZ97 with it's 10 round mag capacity.

While I think the CZ 97 is a very high quality firearm, I also think it's grip is rather massive. Make sure you can handle one first.

one of the most accurate .45s i have ever shot was a friends, sig p220. quarter to half dollar sized groups, offhand, at 7 yards were the norm. i shot several sub
3" groups, off sandbags, at 50 yards. the test target that came with the gun, was an awesome quarter sized hole. loved the sights......

sadly, prices vary from region to region. $700.00 may be on par for your area. try to get it, if you can. i think of sig P220s as the primo of double action .45s.

I am aware of the existence of SAO P220s but they have zero appeal for me because I prefer the SAO trigger of the 1911. It's a personal thing I love Sigs with DA/SA triggers but do not care for their SA
Or DAO triggers.

As for the CZ 97 IRS a great gun but simply too big for my hands. If I where to choose a 45 ACP of that size I would opt for more capacity.

Like what? Glock 21? FN-45? M&P45? XD-45?

Explain?

Also...I came across a new SIG P220 carry for $800...? Is that too much? It's base it's the base model carry. 4.9 barrel.
