I'd start out trying to find a lower receiver. You need to decide what type magazine system you want to use first. Essentially there's two camps, camp one, DPMS/KAC which use the Magpul, DPMS and original AR-10 magazine and two, the Armalite, which use a modified M14 mag. There's a third that uses FAL mags which is not as popular.
Problem is parts are pretty scarce these days and it may take you a while to get all the parts to build. It may be cheaper to buy a complete rifle. |

In my opinion:
Build an AR-15. Buy an AR-10. Get one that uses Magpul mags. |

Additionally real AR10 receivers are not dimensionally compatible with the SR25/DPMS LR308s...
Buying parts can become confusing and are often mislabeled online.

I'd second the .308 AR in something like a DPMS. I say that because DPMS, Sun Devil, etc will run magpul mags and others. With the scare on mags I'd lean towards something you can use a variety of mags in rather than only being able to run just one type.

Rock River uses FAL mags. Considering I have a half ton pickuptruck loadof them, that's why I went with RR.

Building an AR-10 is not like building an AR-15, they are not modular. You can't buy a lower here, an upper there, etc. and put them together and expect them to fit. They don't even use the same mags, half the time. You basically have to buy all your parts form the same company, which means you're just buying the gun and assembling it for them.
That said, the RRA AR-10 seems the best to me. You can swap between .243, 7mm-08 and .308 and they take FAL mags, which are cheap. If you want to use polymer-tipped bullets, especially in 7mm or .243, buy at least one RRA mag, though. The FAL mags chew up the tips apparently. |

You don't necessarily have to buy all the parts from the same company, but you do need to be aware of the compatibility issues with the 7.62 AR platform.
Using "AR-10" as a generic term for the 7.62 AR just adds to the confusion. "AR-10" is a trademarked name for the ArmaLite 7.62 AR, there are two models of the AR-10. The "A" and the "B", the B model uses modified M14 mags and the A model uses the SR-25, or Magpul style mags. |

Check out the new S&W M&P 10 that was just released. Guns&Ammo just had a article on one and I'm thinking hard about it right now.

If modularity is a consideration, consider the Colt LE901. These can be converted back an forth between a 7.62 upper and a 5.56 upper using the same lower receiver. The others will not allow this. These are difficult to obtain but the ability to do this appeals to me.

Worked with the new S&W M&P 10 yesterday.
Flawless out of the box, one load (with a Leupold scope) put three inside an inch at 100 yards. If I had any use for an AR in .308, I'd be severely tempted to keep it. I had enough problems with two ArmaLite .30 ARs a while back to keep me away from those. S&W does their own 10 & 5-round mags for these. Denis |

random thought just popped in my head
Since S&W just released its M&P10, wonder if they will come out with a Sport version like the M&P15 Sport? Granted some people want the FA and dust cover but how many people would actually need to use them? I don't miss them on my 15 Sport.
