I have an opportunity to trade my Remington 700 Sendero in 300 win mag for a Winchester model 1400. Before you laugh, the 1400 comes with a long barrel and an 18" barrel with heatshield and bayo. Is this a fair trade? Is the model 1400 a reliable shooter? Thanks for any info you can give. Laxman

I'm not sure what the Remington's worth, but I've seen prices for Winchester 1400's starting in the mid to upper $200 range. As far as dependability, I've owned a model 140 (the lower gloss no-frills version) for around 20 years or so. In the beginning, I used it for small game and informal trap and never had a problem. Now, with a cut-off barrel and scope, it makes a pretty fair deer gun. Beware that with the short barrel, it won't cycle lighter or field loads but works fine with buckshot or slugs. I've heard of several people on other forums that had problems with this model with failure to cycle or feed, but I haven't experienced this personally.

Lax, even up, that's not a good trade. The Sendero around here is a steady $500 + rifle. The shotgun is $250 - 350 with the spare barrel.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll pass on the deal based on your info. Thanks again, Lax
