Vintage Smith & Wesson holsters?

I see a good many of the vintage Smith & Wesson holsters around at gunshows and on the internet auction sites. Many seem to be the Threepersons variety with the retention strap. I can't find much info on who originally made them. I'm pretty certain they weren't made by S&W. Does anyone have any information on them? My main question is regards to the model numbers and which ones fit what guns.
