I've Been Tossing Good Brass!

I noticed the other day that some 9mm got mixed in with my Mak brass from range pickup. I looked at it closer. EEK!

The headstamp said 9mmM! I didn't notice the "M" before. I was looking for 9mm MAK. Damn! I ran for the micrometer to double check my suspicion! Sure enough. Doh! How much of that stuff did I toss into the bushes?

With 9mm being as cheap as it is in Wally World, I don't even bother to reload it anymore.

I have trouble every time I go to our county law enforcement range, leaving all that free brass there. Fully paved, 100 by 300 feet--The brass doesn't even get dirty and can't hide in the grass.

The situation is not too bad on official qualification day, because the brass mostly belongs to the agency, and it is sent for trade-in credit. But on open range days, the guys and gals furnish their own ammo, and most do not reload.

There's just TOO MUCH .40 and 9 mm and .223 stuff to bother with. I scrounge as much of the .45 as I can. (Wouldn' t you know it? Almost EVERYONE who reloads, reloads .45 ACP!) And I don't own a .357 SiG.

I already own more 9 and .40 brass than I can afford to load for myself and friends. I do NOT want to get into commercial loading. And, when rushed or in dim light, .40 is hard to tell from .45 at a glance.

So I get as much .45 as I can find, and sometimes a little .38 and .357 brass. (Not much of THAT to be found.) Very little reloadable centerfire rifle other than .223. No .45 Colt or .44 Anything. Can't recall seeing any Super .38 or, indeed, ANY 9 mm other than 9x19. I'm sure we have a couple of people who have .380s but haven't seen any of the brass.

Oh, well, that's how it goes.

Sure, I'll trade brass. I'm not too sure about the economics of shipping it, though. Houndawg, I note you're in Illinois. Rottweiler, where are you? I'm in Denton, in North Texas--Next county N of Fort Worth and Dallas, one tier of counties S of the Red River. I'd make a short day trip to meet and swap, but I'm really not up to driving halfway to Illinois. Sorry.

Or, let's research shipping costs. Is it strictly a weight thing, so that it costs almost twice as much to ship 4,000 pieces of brass as to ship 2,000?

I'll check from this end and you check from yours. I have a feeling I'll come out somewhat better, shipping the smaller brass.

I'm in Latrobe PA, home of Rolling Rock beer, Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, Timken bearings and Arnold Palmer. I'd imagine that the controlling factor in the shipping of brass will be the weight. There won't be any hazmat or other issues. After all all we are doing is shipping metal.

I've got 2000 .40 once-fired indoor range brass that's all sorted, inspected, and tumbled to shiny like new.

I'll trade it for 1000 .45's if anyone is interested.
