Companies that do NOT make a 1911

A 1911 thread with a twist. Now that Ruger has joined the ranks of the 1911 makers, what major semi auto makers do not make a 1911 (or at least put their name on one). Also which of those companies do you want to see make one and which do you think would have the most sucess based on name only. So far I have:

Beretta
Walther
glock
HK
FN

I can't see any company you listed making a good 1911. Not their style.

Stoeger
Caracal
Steyr
Bersa
Browning (ironically)
CZ
Hi-Point (Hah!)

I do believe browning makes a 1911

They have a scaled down .22lr that is easy to find. They also offer a 45acp that (as far as I know) is offered as part of a set with the .22lr. I have not seen one in person, but are told they do exist

IIRC CZ aquired the Dan Wesson brand, which includes the 1911 platform.

You don't think FN could make a good 1911? They don't seem to have problems making hipowers.

Thought of another brand that doesn't make a 1911, keltec. I do not think however that people would be running out to buy keltec 1911s.

Does it seem odd that Browning doesn't sell a 1911 45 by its self. And at those prices I don't think they really want sell them at all. I wonder if that was a special run they had another company do at there specs for them.

Who makes the the 1911 for Browning? Since Browning is a gun marketing firm whose pistols are typically made by FN, FN could actually be making 1911's.

I'm not sure if the Browning .22 1911s are actual 1911s, they may just look like 1911s and function like other .22 pistols that simply look like 1911s. (e.g. ATI 1911 .22lr pistol.)

In regards to the OP's question, I don't recall any large handgun manufacturers, not already listed, that don't make a 1911.

Honda.

They don't make guns, but then at one time they did not make personal watercraft or airplanes.

Everything they make has good quality control and product support.

Colt does not make a pistol they call the 1911.

+1.

This is an interesting topic. Initially, when I thought about this I was kind of bummed- "Why doesn't HK/FN/Beretta make a 1911? They make great guns otherwise...?

Then I remembered this: http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=20180

This was for April fools day from this year... Glock making a 1911 just seems bizarre, right? Or maybe it doesn't, YMMV.

Not to say that these companies couldn't make a fine 1911, but their style is just a little different, and I'm fine with that. I love my HK, but the thought of an HK 1911 is just weird for me. To each their own, I suppose.

I think there are plenty of great companies that have made 1911s out there so it doesn't worry my pretty head one bit. The great thing about the platform is that you really can't go wrong if you use quality steel and all of your parts are fitted correctly. Well, maybe you could go wrong. I'm sure someone has had a lemon out there!

The 1911 market is saturated. Wouldn't make much marketing sense to offer yet another slabside to the masses.

Liocked Breach--

If you buy a recent manufacture Dan Wesson 1911, it will have a CZ serial number.

From most accounts, they are a pretty dang good 1911.

My experience was, perhaps, "the exception to the rule".

Nearly two years, two 1911 smiths and a good bit of money later, mine is finally a keeper. But I will never again buy a used DW 1911 (or, for that matter, having experienced their idea of customer service, a new one), nor would I recommend a DW 1911 to anyone, unless he could put at least 100 rounds through it first.

Yeah, I was saying that, about ten years ago. Apparently, 5% of the 1911 market is a much larger market than 100% of the market for anything else. It's especially curious that the new 1911s are exactly like the ones already being made by a half-dozen makers. The Remington and Ruger guns are not only all but identical to each other, but to two dozen guns from other makers.
I'd think there might be a bigger market for some specific niche, for example, the left-handed 1911, or a chambering that nobody else offers, than for yet another cookie-cutter version.
There does seem to be a market for any 1911 that's made by fill-in-the-blank, as I see posts all the time on the 1911 forums from people who have never owned a 1911 before, but are salivating at the chance to own one made by a company that also has no experience with the type.

You have a point.

OTOH, a company known for QA and CS, that makes an actual MilSpec weapon, would probably do well.

One of the major problems with 1911s is that so many manufacturers have deviated from spec.
