30-30 neck split for firing>?
Has anyone ever had a neck split on a 30-30 reload.
I had 2 out of a batch of 35 that split during shooting. All round felt and looked normal. And no damage to the gun at all. Was it just "old" brass.Winchester brass by the way with winchester primers. 170 gr Remington bullets.Reloader 15 was the powder 2 grains below max. |

I have had 30/30's split that were used a bunch. Sort of "par for the course" after a few reloadings if you full length resize them. Since I slowly tweaked my resizing down so I don't do much excess sizing I have found I get a lot more loads out of them but they still split.
How many loadings did you get before they split?

30-30 is really thin brass... I'm lucky to get 5 loadings out of my brass.
I'm also pretty glad that: #1 - Winchester 170gr silvertip retail shoots very well in both of my 94's and #2 - That load is relatively inexpensive at walmart. When deer season sales hit, I pick up 5-10 boxes each year to stock up on lazy ammo and brass. When loading, I tend to crumple the shoulder before any other damage occurs though. Especially when using bullets with a sharp, non-beveled base. I've had maybe half a dozen split in the last 3 years of loading, out of maybe 1000 reloaded rounds done out of about 300 pieces of brass. I think it's from too tight of a crimp when firing. I crimp the heck out of mine to eliminate any set-back from recoil when in the tube mag. |

Azred. What I do is load and shoot my 30-30 brass four times, then anneal the case necks. Keeps them from splitting a lot longer. You might want to do it after the third reload.
When the Super K-mart was shutting their doors down here i Tucson, I bought up all the Winchester 30-30 170 gr. Powerpoints. Twenty-seven boxes at $4.00 a box. I got a bunch of .308 Win. and 30-06 on the cheap as well. Paul B.
