Bullet Seating Depth 45 colt
Hey guys, I'm going to start reloading 45 colt soon and got a lee mold for cast
WFN GC 300 grain bullets. the problem is that it has two crimp grooves, a helpful tool for any needed variations in bullet seating depth. However, I'm new to the reloading world and would appreciate any information regarding how deep I should seat my bullets. I'm not sure if air space in the shell effects pressure, or if it is just a way to compact certain powders or to adjust for varying OAL adjustmens. Will be making loads w/ aprox. 16-22 grains of powder. Thanks P.S - Using Cimarron 1892 levergun |

From your other post you stated you are loading for a lever action rifle. The manual of the rifle should state the maximum overall length that the rifle will handle. Measure with the round seated at the first groove. If it is too long seat to the second one.
Also loading a dummy round to load into the magazine. Cycle the lever to see if it feeds. Note you should not have to too wild with the crimp in the lever action. Though a firm crimp is needed to prevent too much set back.

My 45 Colt rifle load is 21.5 gr of H4227 behind a Western Bullets 300 gr lead FNGC for an OAL of 1.632.

Try seating it long and working it thru your gun.
If it cycles, great. If it dont, seat it shorter. We like that Lee bullet loaded really hot with 110/296 in rifles and pistols. |
