Mossberg 500 or 590A1?

Now, some may say no contest, but let's look at my situation. This shotgun will probably be my only gun for awhile, so I want versatility. Don't hunt nor have I ever shoot trap (though it's not because I'm offended by it; we do our shooting in an old quarry, and I'm nervous about shooting into the air, so close to town, though other people do it and I don't think it'll matter.). The gun must, however, be fun, cool, and acceptable for self-defense. I can't spend more than $400, though, I don't think. While I'll be getting a wad of money, about $3600, soon, I need about $3000 of that for initial college bills, so I need to be frugal.

MOSSBERG 590A1

PROS: Ghost ring sights, 8+1 capacity, parkerized finish, politically incorrect bayonet lug, heavy barrel, steel trigger guard and saftey. My friend Matthew has a M500, and my friend Dave has an M590, so the 590A1 would put me ahead of both of them, and, being the unabashedly vain person that I am, this is actually a factor in my gun purchasing.

CONS: Costs more, lacks interchangable barrels.

MOSSBERG 500

PROS: All sorts of different barrels, wood or synthetic stock, costs a lot less, can even buy a "combo" gun with two barrels.

CONS: The shortest smoothbore barrel with sights I can find is 24", though the 18.5" riot barrel would be perfectly acceptable for home defense scenarios. 5+1 capacity is plenty, but it IS less than 8+1.

So. If, given the two choices, and you were me, what would you get? Also under consideration is the Remintgon 870 Express and the Winchester Camp Defender, but in this thread I'd like to find out about the Mossbergs.

590A1,... just the looks alone is already good enough for HD

My thinking it to buy the 590A1. I have one and would not sell/trade it for anything.

I have also owned the 590 and got rid of it fast.

I have the Remington Express and also like it very much.

Either of these you can't go wrong but my preference is still the 590A1.

The only drawback the 590A1 has and it isn't much of a one is the weight.
