Loading data for 1858 Remington?

repro 1858 REmington New Army.
manual says 15 grains of fffg. How much more can I SAFELY load without hurting it or me?

I was taught (NRA and NMLRA) that the rule of thumb of loading black powder revolving pistols is that they should/can be loaded with the grain equivalent of half the caliber of the pistol. That is, a .44 cal would be loaded with 22 grains of powder, .36 cal would be loaded with 18 grains. This has proven to be a satisfacory loading in my experience.

I shoot 25gr. fffg in all my revolvers.
Rem 1858 and my reb and colt repros.
They all shoot well and have continually shocked my friends in accuracy.
I wouldn't shoot more than that. A problem I have encountered is the lack of good reading material and data on revolvers. This is because of the vast amount of companies making these guns.
Keep your charges low is the advice I have recieved. You really don't know how well these guns are made or what kind of steel they are using.
I have spent hours tuning mine and unless you know what your doing don't bother.
Stay with a maker that is well known and you should be all right.

Ditto to what Willy just said. I use about 23 to 25 gr. depending upon distance to the target.

They say 12-15 grains, dealer said 30 was safe...22 sounds like a good top for now. Thanks.
