Mineral Oil....question about
I see that a lot of the odorless gun oils on the market that are geared for deer hunters contain mineral oil. Is this the same "odorless and tasteless" mineral oil that is found in the pharmacy and used as a laxative? I am just wondering because it should be a lot cheaper to buy the laxative version rather than the small two to three ounce "hunter" formula. I realize that mineral oil may not be the best rust protective out there but I like to apply it to my guns every other hunting trip or so just to prevent them from rusting. I don't want to apply a better preventative such as Break Free CLP or Weapon Shield during hunting season because it will spook game. Thanks for any comments back.

Mineral oil is a carrier, not a rust inhibitor
That said, try: - To 4 teaspoons of mineral oil, - add ½ teaspoon of Lee Liq ALOX, - and 1 drop of dishwashing soap (or better a very small shaving of pure Ivory soap). Heat in boiling water (double-boil), shake well....., let settle (I'll try and exposed-metal rust test staring tomorrow) Last edited by mehavey; December 10, 2014 at 08:42 PM. |

As promised..... (my favorite old hammer,
sanded to bare metal, then tested by laying in bare ground contact for almost four days.) |

I don't worry at all about the scent of oil in a gun compared to the scent of the person holding it.
Unless you hunt pure wilderness, your deer are used to smelling oils on a regular basis. They will smell you before they smell that oil. They will identify YOUR odor as a threat. not the oil.

In one area I hunt I smoke cigars and see game because a guy from the cabin tract in the area smokes nonstop and the deer and elk are always around him. Above my cabin I tie my ratty stinky shirts to trees so the deer and elk get used to my scent. It does work I have talked to deer and elk before season within fifty feet and I have them coming down to my blocks for hours at a time. My luck is that it ois always not in season or after dark.
