Hog hunting in the rain

Years ago , I am and old 60 year old Nam vet , Here in Florida we would go hog hunting pistols only.
Usually it was best in the rain (makes things quieter)
We would load the 6 shooter , remove the cylinder , carefully light grease around the ball with a brush and drip 2-3 drops of candle wax on top.
Cap it and carefully seal with clear nail polish water proofing the thing.
Took many hogs this way some 20 years ago , what do you folks do now if out in the rain?

I have not hunted hogs in the rain yet Pappy, but if I did, I think I would just clean my Marlin 336 when I got back to the cabin. BTW Thank you for you service, and anyone eles who has served that reads this.

I never heard of anybody hunting hogs with a cap and ball revolver.
I did kill a 140 pound boar with a 1911 .45 ACP.
What pistol, and what load were you using on the piggies?
How well did it perform? How many shots did it take to nail the hog?

Thanks for your service Pappy. I suspect taking game with a blackpowder pistol is very satisfying.

58 old army 44 , 30 grains of home made , 454 140 grain ball.
Florida hunting is different , we would be asked to hunt on a farmers land with problems with hogs. they still ask my younger friends.
Day before look at the land , pick a big live oak.
Nite before get drunk on beer while filling a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full of grain corn , 3/4's with water and 1/2 can of lye , yep makes hominy,
stirr now and then.
very early before sunrise put the bucket under the tree , climb tree and be quiet.
Hogs cannot resist the smell , well you can figure out the rest , had many of a nice pig roast I tell ya.

simonkenton - my son took a small boar (about 125lb) with my 1858 a few years back. Used 30gr 3fg Goex Black with 180gr Buffalo conical bullets.
It penetrated better than I expected, he shot the thing from maybe 10 yards away at a downward angle - the bullet passed thru the shoulder shield, out the bottom of his chest, then thru the opposing front leg, and then into the ground somewhere.................hard to beat that for penetration and porky really didn't argue the point, just laid down and kicked his last (one shot - one kill ).

Here's a pic of his conquest: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo...34387275CZRCZm

I've done a bunch of hog hunting in Osceola County back when I lived out by the Cape and shot 'em with just about everything in my arsenal....................but to be truthful, I never had to contend with rain when I was using black powder arms.

That is a nice pig Mark. I am surprised your son got such good penetration.

I wish my dad had taken me hog hunting.

Especially where you would have to blow up Ken! :barf:

Ah, I wish I could have had fun in my youth like that boy there with the feral hog. Unfortunately, you can't do much hunting in the Chicago suburbs!

The Doc is out now.

Mark ...no doubt the Buffalo hunt is my dream hunt also ...been wishing since I was a kid ......
I planted a big garden so we can eat Buffalo and fresh veggies for the next year ... I finally convienced the wife it`s just buying meat in advance ..
The place we are hunting told me to be prepaired for a 200 yard shot ...I`ve been praticeing with the Sharps and it will be possible if needed ...I sighted in dead on at 100 yards and when I flip the ladder sight up ...the bottom notch is dead on 200 yards ...with a .535 gr postell bullet over 68 grs of 2F powder ....should do the job ....will post some pics when we return .

Pappy, you got a few years on me but not many. I'm on the right part of the state about 3 1/2 hrs. away. You and Otto want to go get something, count me in. Have guns, will travel.

Well maybe we could put something together here , we will have to go to Ocala or somewhere like that as hunting here has gone to **** in the last 30 years, but that's no big thing as I have all the camping **** (tent , heater if needed , stove , lanterns all Colman , coolers) got to bring your own fart sack and inflatable bed.
Could be a great time.
I will provide the ride to get there , rent the camp site , buy your own beer though! LOL.
8 man tent , big sucker so we don't get to close , ha ha ha.
I have a 3 bedroom house here , paid for many years ago so if nothing else we will have a good time.
and I shoot the 44 from time to time rite here in the house!

1/2 full, plus 3/4 with water. Methinks you have 1/4 overflow there.

Oh wait, that first part explains it all.

That explains that , you are a child , any adult can read 1/2 with corn , fill it to 3/4's with water and then lie.
where are you from son? NY city maby?
Any lawyer would post there real name and company to get business.
your a fraud and should be ashamed.
