I ma seeking a thorough explication of who makes the best mariner-type shotgun. The 870 and the MOssberg both have nickel-plated finishes, I believe, and winchester makes one with totally stainless barrels. Is one finish better/more durable, more corrosion resistant. It will be in a saltwater environment.

I had a Remington 870 Marine Magnum. Great gun, easy to clean. Wish I had never got rid of it. It's finish was very tough. Nicks were hard to make in it.

My 870 Marine Magnum has been through years worth of humid, rainy, snowy, nasty weather at different times and still looks NIB. We will never part...

My 870 MM has been through some crazy arizona summers without any rust whatsoever! Can you believe that? Oh, wait, I guess that's not such a big deal. But it is really really hard to scratch up. Really.

The Electroless Nickle finish on the 870 Marine is about 100 times tougher than whatever Mossberg uses on their Marine shotgun. I have heard continual reports of the Mossberg finish rusting and discoloring. The Remington EN finish is just about impervious to Salt water or anything else for that matter. Almost imposible to scratch or mar, self lubricating. No choice... The Remington wins hands down.

although i prefer the safty and slide release location on 500 series mossbergs, my trunk gun is the 870 marine magnum. very strong finish, indeed.

I too own a Remington Model 870 Marine Magnum. Here in central Alabama where
the summer's are real hot, and winter's can vary; the finish on the 870 wins hands down!!! Best Wishes, Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member |
