I really like the choices with way more energy than a .30-06. I believe the most useful responses would be something more than 1,300 ft lbs and less than 3,000 ft lbs - .300 mag really?

25 06 would be a great choice. With over 2300 ft lbs of energy, it's a flat shoot hard hitting round.

Why 25-06 of course.

If I had to give up my old 30-06 and that would be hard. I guess my old SAKO 270 would just have to take up the slack. ken

In 1952 I purchased a Winchester Mdl 70 270 and started reloading ammo for it in 1953. I have killed pronghorn ,mule deer, elk, varmints and some unwonted critters with may old rifle. Over the years I have killed deer with a 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem, 264 Win Mag, 270 Win, and 308 Norma Mag. It was fun trying out the different cartridges but all I needed was that old 270.

Either another 223 or another 30/06. Or both.
A light and a heavy 223 (or an AR and a bolt) and a light and a heavy '06. Different scopes, maybe different loads. |

For me, .270 Winchester is the clear winner. 7mm-08 runner up.

I choose the 6.5x55 Swede, or .260 Remington. If you reload they are very similar in performance as is the 7MM Mauser and 7MM-08 to one another.

7-08. Plenty of brass to convert.

You Mean Calliber, as in Diameter of Bullet.
So you ask what we the Members of the board would use between .22 Cal and .30 Cal if we cant have either ? Strange, but I would prefer 7MM Mauser. |

I'm a big fan of the 270win. but It's to close to a 30-06, To split between .223 & 30-06 I'd pick
1- 7-08 2- 7x57 3- 25-06 4- 257 Roberts |

For no particular reasons, it'll probably be 6.5G for semiauto rifles, and 300WinMag for Bolt actions.
Although I'm a big fan of the 300Blackout, it has its limitations. |

Tossup between .280 Remington and 7mm-08, with a slight lead for the .280.
If we were going to specify a semi-auto only platform, I'd have to go with either 7.62x39R or 6.8 SPC, unless they make AR-10s in 7mm-08... |

I'd go with 35 Remington. No need for long range where I hunt.

I already made that choice and got a .260 Remington If larger animals (elk, etc.) were on the menu, 6.5x55SE because it can drive 160gr bullets better. Although, I have a .338 Federal but that's outside of your caliber range.

Any of a host of cartridges would work fine for the vast majority of what I shoot. Anything from a .243/6mm up to a .308 cal, requirements would only be that the case would be the size of the .308 or so, and be chambered in a rifle I like with good optics on it. After that its just beer/camfire discussions. Put good quality bullets where they belong, and let physics do the rest.
