Glocks vs S&W M&P
Looking at both of these guns. It's between the Glock 17 and Full Size M&P 9mm. Which would you buy and why?

I own and love both platforms.
For me, the full size M&P beats the Glock 17. The Glock 19 beats the M&P 9c, and I have a hard time picking a winner between the G26 and Shield. The Shield is slimmer/smaller but fewer rounds. Hard to compare those 2. For full size I would vote M&P 9 Pro(or M&P w/ night sights and Apex Tactical trigger) You can't really go wrong either way. Clear as mud? Good.

Both are awesome. I have a 19 and a full size m&p9. I don't have a 17 but have Shot one. I prefer the 19 to the 17. For range purpose I prefer m&p, I shoot them a little better but I prefer glock for a sidearm. I have a m&p 40c and I feel it's the most accurate for me. You really can't go wrong with either.

Being pretty equal, just choose whichever one fits your hand better. I will say that I've had nothing but good experiences with S&W's customer service though, so if anything does go wrong, they'll honor their warranty. I've never had to deal with Glock's customer service.

For me, Glock.
Simple, reliable, durable, and accurate.

Merits....
Both types have merits.
Glocks have a lot of after-market parts & custom features. Holsters, gear, etc are fairly easy to get too. They are easy to maintain & clean. I would buy the Glock 4th Gen(I'm left handed) but if you shoot right, the Gen 03 or Gen 04 could work well. Many gun owners & Glock shooters push for new Gen 03 type Glocks. I've owned 02 M&P pistols in the recent past, a full size 9x19mm & a .45acp Compact. Both were fine & I had no problems with either caliber. If a ambi safety is a feature you want, Id buy a M&P. I prefer the "no magazine safety" type. Apex Tactical markets a great after market trigger kit for M&Ps. The Trijicon HD 3 dot sights are a great add-on for Military & Police pistols. Glock models too. As noted, S&W has a lifetime service plan. Glocks are sold with Davidison's Lifetime Warranty offers if you do research. If you can rent/borrow both brands & try them out. No question in my mind. I'm getting the Glock 17 gen 3. The Glocks have better triggers and likely more sight options.
The M&P's have crap triggers, but many say the grip fits like a glove. I do agree that block,...uh I mean Glock grips are hard to hold. I would add XD to this list. It is superior in every way... |

Thanks everyone! Both sound like good choices but I have decided on the M&P. I appreciate everyone's help!

I have never shot or held the m&p but my G17 gen4 is yet to malfunction in a little over 1200 rounds. Finish is just as good as the day I got it, save for the paint on the stamped sheet metal slide release. Also, as mentioned in previous posts the gun is simple and rugged. Downside of course being the inability to shoot cast lead, if you reload.

I love the ergonomics of the M&P platform I think it can't be beat.

Doesn't the M&P 9 still have problems with accuracy past 15 yards with some ammo? I know that my instructor's M&P 9's were very picky and he only got good performance out of some expensive JHP ammo. Others have corroborated this recently, but perhaps their information is old. It would seem to me that the problem is inside the barrel if some cartridges work and others don't.

Reliability was not reinvented but simplicity has changed the way they are made today. Actually I think the P90 is simpler by design than the 3rd gen S&W's. Glock's simplicity has an AK47 style to it that lends to the rugged and reliable allure that surrounds it. As far as the G17 and M&P 9 I like the M&P stock better. Grip angle, sights and the safety option work better for me. Both accuracy and reliability are just as good on either for me.

It has been reported, but I have yet to experience such an issue among numerous m&p's.
My m&p 9 shots just as accurately as my p226.

Took it right out of my mind. Good call there. The only thing I would have to say about their week points from the factory when speaking of the full sized firearms in question is this: M&P = horrible trigger reset. Not audible or tactile from the factory. Glock wins. Glock = sights are an absolute joke. M&P takes the win on that one. Other than that being the only things I see bad about each. Everything else I love. |

For the life of me, I still don't understand the love affair people have with Glock. They fit your hand like a brick. They are unnecessarily bulky. Glock's trigger is average. Their plastic sights are a joke. As for aftermarket parts, why would you have to change out parts on "Perfection"? I have owned several Glocks when I was new to pistols, and they did one thing well- they went bang every time I pulled the trigger. Other than that, I wasn't really impressed. IMO, the M&P is a much better gun than the Glock 17 as far as ergonomics go. Other than that, they are both high capacity, reliable guns. Not much difference there. Now if I had the opportunity to own a Glock 18, I'd be all over it. I'll leave the rest to the Kool Aid drinkers |

I never much understood the "holding a brick" thing either. I find the ergonomics to be plenty accurate and not terribly square. Sure, it's not as comfortable as the m&p or p30, but when I think of blocky guns, the first that come to mind are the XD and USP. For me, biggest turn on with Glock is the simplicity. Fewer parts than it's closest competitors and of disassembly. The ability to strip the gun to its smaller components and reassemble it completely within a couple of minutes is nice. No social tools necessary.

I'm not big into 9mm but have a lot of .45 ACP pistol to include the M&P45 and Glock 21. Really, the better one is actually the H&K USP45 so I would say if you are looking for a 9mm equivalent, I would check out the H&K USP9.

Uncle Malice, again I agree. I don't understand these grown men complaining about them in that way. Dainty hands much?
And my SIG's and HK's are much more "bulky" than my Glock's. As to the comment of "the only good thing it did was go bang every time." Can someone get him a cookie? That's the point. The gun enthusiast in my likes BHP's and 1911's. But that like doesn't go past the range. I'll never trust my life to either. I've seen more of those down and die (1911) than I'd like to remember. The serious self defense in me, is much more on the Glock side. I understand the Glock hater fanboys. I used to be one until I put my man pants on. |

Larry Vickers/Glock slide release....
Former spec ops soldier & respected pistolsmith Larry Vickers designed a high quality after market Glock slide release that looks & works a lot like the M&P type part.
I don't recall who sells it. It's not VTAC but another Glock parts maker. If I track it down I will post it. The after-market Vickers Glock part has many + reviews from armed professionals & Glock owners. Clyde |
